PIPE BANDS B. GRADE MARCH CONTEST AT DUNEDIN
WON BY NEW PLYMOUTH ENTRANT P.A. DUNEDIN, March 26. .The New Plymouth Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band won the B grade quickstep contest at Carisbrook, which was held this afternoon, by a narrow margin, from the Auckland and District Highland Pipe Band, and the Ashburton County Scottish Society’s Pipe Band. It was the first day c-f the Dominion Pipe Band championship centennial contest, which opened in the morning with a church parade on the oval. The weather was ideal, and there was an attendance of at least 7000 people. The contest, which is the first to be held in Dunedin since 1933, has attracted bands from as far north as Auckland, and as fari south as Invercargill, and there are at least 600 pipers in 29 bands competing. Nineteen bands participated in the first day of the contest, and they revealed a surprisingly high standard, particularly on the military side, maximum points for whicn were 200, as against 100 for music. An excellent marching performance went to the credit of the Auckland and District Band. Results: —
