A young woman was mauled by a monkey on Export Wharf, Auckland, recently. She was boarding the overseas vessel Trewellard when a monkey jumped on to hex* shoulder. Before she knew what had happened the monkey had pushed its hands into her mouth and taken a large piece of skin out of the inside of her bottom lip. A St. John ambulance took the woman to the Auckland Hospital at 2.15, and she was given an injection to prevent tetanus. The monkey belonged to a member of the crew of the Trewellard.

When his hand was caught between two trucks in the Wallsend State Coal Mine yesterday, a trucker, John William Gwatkins, married, aged 42, had two lingers crushed. He was admitted to 'the Grey Hospital, where his condition last night was reported to be satisfactory.

A scrub fire on the Cobden foreshore, near a house in Peel Street, yesterday morning .was the cause of both the Cobden and Greymouin fire engines receiving an alarm. Residents in the area gave the alarm, thinking that the lire constituted a danger to the house.

A permit to construct club rooms and a dance hall with floor space large enough for any GreyijiQUth function, at a cost of about £lO,OOO, has again been sought by the Greymouth Returned Services’ Association. As on the occasion of the previous application, however, the Building Controller has not granted a permit, on account of the urgent need of building materials for the erection of houses.

A strong plea to make land available at the earliest oportunity for light industry was made by Cr. C. G Butcher, at a meeting of the Napier Borough Council on Monday night. Cr. Butcher said that there were many inquiries from industries about the posibilitv of starting in Napier. He considered that the main , thing was to get more industry going in the area. The council decided to approach the Napier Harbour Board to see if there was any possibility of making land availability for light industry.

Six new State residences in the Holland Settlement in Cobden will shortly be available lor occupation Six new units were occupied shortly before Christmas. Work is proceeding on 17 more homes, 29 Rehabilitation trainees in carpentry and six in painting being engaged. Recently two men arrived from Christchurch but will have to return unless they can find accommodation.
