NO INCREASE
POLICE FORCE RATE OF PAY. P.A. WELLINGTON, June 4. “From reports of the estimates presented to the House of Representatives it may have-been gahered that the rate of pay "for the Police Force has been increased for the present financial year to the extent of £70,000,” said the general secretary ■of the New 1 Zealand Police Association (Mr J. Meltzer). “Actually,” he said, “that is not the position. There has been no increase in pay, although there has been an overtime allowance given to compensate members of the force for the long hours worked in comparison with other workers. The figure of £70,000 alleged as an increase in nay seems to have been arrived at by comoaring the amount actually exnended last year with the amount of the estimate for this year,” he said. “It is submitted that the correct comparison is between the amount actuali voted last year. £709.401, and the amount of the estimate for this vear (£655.038). the increase being about £45.000. This increase is accounted for by the provision for an increased number of non-commis-sioned officers, constables, and women police, involvings small increase in the cost of living bonus payable, and the overtime allowance referred to.”
