FOR WEST COAST Match at Rugby Park VISITORS WIN BY 26 TO 5. . Excellent football was_on display at the annual Kind’s Birthday representative Rugby match, • Canterbury v. West Coast yesterday at Rugby Park. Canterbury, especially the backs, gave a ve y good exhibition to win by 26 points to 5. For a war time fixture, the attendance was very gooc., nearly all the seats being-, occupied, and many stood on the northern bank. Conditions were ideal, a firm .ground and a cloudless sky. In the forward department, the teams were evenly matched. For Coast. RKing, Birchfield, and Coppersmith showed prominently, while Herman, the Canterbury.captain, and G. Henderson, a former West Coaster, were tigers for the ball. Canterbury backs definitely dominated the play, their passing and running being of the first order. The young set of Coast backs lacked combination and handled and tackled poorly. Both full backs, J. Lindbom and_Callinan were superb, Lindbom, by virtue of his years (and, no doubt, because he played for Coast) received rounds of applause. Of the 35 scrums, Coast won 16, Canterbury 14 and 5 were indecisive. Canterbury were awarded three penalties, West Coast, had six. In the line outs, Coast won 19, Canterbury 25 and 14 were indecisive. The teams were:—

Henderson. Mr. N. Eggleton was referee. Coast won, the toss and elected to play south. Callinan kicked long and high to Lindbom who found touch with a good kick. Canterbury backs secured from the line-out but Hayes effectively lowered Wilson. ' A. series of mishandles by the Canter- ; bury backs nearly let Coast forwards through but- Callinan saved brilliantly. Coast were penalised for “feet up” 35 yards from their goal line, but Callinan’s essav fell short. Canterbury forwards were hooking well and Hewitt secured to Garrett to Jones to Wilson to Kerr, out on to Jones, who however, was sat upon by R-". King. Weenink on the other win" secured and topped of a good dash by an excellent centring kick landing under the posts. The Canterbury forwards were on top of it but a 25 eventuated. From on the half way mark, Coast backs handled out to Strachan who was tackled in possession. At this stage Hewitt received an injury to his knee and was replaced by Harvey. A free kick to Canterbury at half way was put into touth near the corner flag by Callinan. Eager bustling play followed and the Coast forwards led by R. King eased the situation. However a short punt by Wilson had Canterbury hammering again, on the Coast line but a penalty for Coast relieved. _ Play swung down into the Canterbury half where Jones charged down a clearing kick by Harvey, Callinan found touch. Well inside his own half, Harvey worked the* blind side to Weenink who, on being threatened passed infield to Henderson who strided 40 yards for a magnificient try. Callinan added the extras. Canterbury s—West Coast 0. Canterbury backs were now in top gear and it was good luck more than good management that saved Const. Continuous attacks were relieved by a penalty and bv Lindbom’s effortless ling kicks. A good run by; Garrett was stopped on the line by Linubom. Coast attacked hard and Henderson just managed to clear on Canterbury’s line. Sweetman received possession on the 25 with; a clear run and almost burst over, but Gallinari was in the way. In his own half. Garrett secured from a scrum handed to Weenink to Wilson who caught Sweetman out of position and crashed over the line tackled by Hayes. A great kick by Callinan just missed. Canterbury 8 West Coast 0. From a seemingly impossible position, Lindbom attempted a pot wh’ch scraped under. From the resulting 25. Goodall secured to Dewar, to Wright, to- Strachan who, lost possession and the ball went into a ruck From this ruck, in Canterbury territory, Jones caught the defence on the wrong foot and ran to Lindbom and on. being tackled Passed to Wilson who crossed over. Callinan converted. Canterbury 13 —West Coast 0. Dewar kicked to Callinan who made no 1 mistake. From the hne-out Goodall handed out to Strachan but the pass was bad and the: movemen> was halted. Henderson figured prominently in a Canterbury rush which was still gaining ground when the half time whistle blew. Immediately after Dewar kicked off Harvey secured ran hard making a good opportunity, passed to Weenink who. on being challenged by Lindbom, passed infield to Herman who had a clear run. Callman converted. —— Canterbury 18 —'West Coast 0. A penalty against Canterbury was kicked long and high by Dewar but was marked by Harvey. A spectacular Cntbry back movement with Callinan as extra back looked danger - ous till Weenink was crowded out. Coast forwards, with Coppersmith leading, bustled into Can - a e J;J where Dewar picked up and hanaea to Hayes who made a determined run but was halted on the line. Canteibury backs got awav and Weenink made a break passed to Kerr who was downed by Lindbom. Another Canterbury attack was stopped wnen Strachan dumped Wilson very solicilv A short passing rush started on Canterbury 25 culminated in a tricky scoring dash by Wilson. Callinan. missed from well out. Canterbury 21-West Coast (b Dewar’s kick was caught bv Ho.i derson whoi initiated a splendid passing rush for Harvey, Jones. Garrett, WHson and Callinan to handle hut Callinan fumbled 10 yards from the line A loose forward rush led by Goodall put Coast on the attack and thev were awarded- a penalty for an illegal tackle. From 20 yards out near the side-line. Lindbom just failed Canterbury backs again swung into action but Wilson was well tackled bv Coppersmith. Wright tired at this stage and was replaced bv Thomas. Another Canterbury back move ended in Wilson punting out Canterbury forwards took control and were deep in Coast territory when Lindbom, in a great save, took the ball off their feet and found to?ich. for a scrum infringement on the 25 near the line, Coppersmith just failed-. Coast forwards followed up and after hard scrimmaging near the line, R. King forced his wav over to score. Coast’s only try. Birchfield kicked a good conversion West Coast s—Canterbury 26. Full time whistle went on the resumption. In the third grade curtain raiser Westland defeated Grey bv three points to nil. Teller scored the only try. Mr. A. King was referee. f Ashburtoifs Win OVER CANTERBURY REPS. CHRISTCHURCH. June 7. A better set of backs heloed Ashburton to beat Canterbury bv 19 to 12 in a representative match this afternoon. The forwards were fairly evenly matched, but the Canterbury backs were outclassed in every department, and unlike the Ashburton players, thev failed to seize their opportunities. Four tries came from _ movements by Ashburton backs, while Canterbury’s points included three penalty goals. The Ashburton scorers were Green (two tries), Kilworth (two tries). Behrns (a penalty goal, and two conversions.) For Canterbury Muir kicked three penalty goals and Hayles scored a try.
