AIR FORCE AND MANPOWER. P.A. AUCKLAND, J'une 3. A resolution viewing with" concern the calling up of men in key positions in industry, commerce, and primary production, particularly in the older age groups, was carried by the Chamber of Commerce Council, today, after members had expressed anxiety regarding the strain on industry through the loss of large numbers of men.
“The Air Force does not come here and will not write and tell rig what the position is,” said Mr F. J. Cox (Crown representative) when an appeal by an insurance company for the exemption of an agency supervisor from, service was heard by the Armed Forces Appeal Board to-day. The company representative stated that reservist, not a Grade 1 man, had elected to serve in the Air Force. Mr Cox said that if the Air Force were represented in such cases or gave written information to the Board of its needs the Board could weigh up the respective Air Force and industrial requirements. The appeal was adjourned sine die.
CONFERENCE OF CHURCH LEADERS. P.A. ' CHRISTCHURCH, June 2. The Dean of Christchurch, Very Rev. A. K. Warren, left Christchurch recently to attend a world conference of ecclesiastical leaders in New York. Information concerning matters to be considered at the conference is not yet available, but it is probable that post-war problems associated with religion, education, economics and related subjects, will be discussed. Dean Warren was chosen by the N.Z. Council of Churches to represent all denominations with the exception of the Roman Catholic Church. The conference is being convened by an American equivalent of the N.Z. Council of Churches. It will be attended by church dignitaries from Great -Britain, the British Empire and other Allied nations. BIGAMISTS SENTENCED AUCKLAND, June 3. Three women came before Judge Fair to-day, for sentence for admitted offences of bigamy. Elsie McNair, 41, was stated by counsel to have been under the influence of liquor when the offence occurred, and the man concerned was also affected by drink at the time. Her legal marriage was now dissolved and she was free to marry. The Crown reoresentative stated that the Registrar of Marriages did not marry persons whom he believed to be inebriated. In imposing a sentence of three months’ imprisonment, the Judge said the prisoner was sentenced last December in Wellington for a previous offence, and was just out of prison when the latest offence was commuted.
Hazel Mary Mann, 41, who had admitted obtaining credit by fraud, theft, false pretences and forgery, in addition to bigamy, was stated by counsel to have committed most of her offences when under the influence of the drug morphia, having contracted the drug habit when she was a nurse, but she had almost cured herself of the habit. The woman was released on probation for three years and ordered to pay £35 restitution, in instalments, in connection with obtaining a fur coat by false pretences. Matehuirua Te Mana, Maori woman, 24. who admitted bigamy with a young Maori at Dargaville, was placed on probation for three years. The Judge said the husband was now overseas and was understood to be obtaining a divorce.
