The" children also responded well, Chrissie Jenkins, Vera Berry, Doreen Morgan, Masters Keith Morgan and Harry Fox giving songs, which were very well received. Mrs. F. Jenkins provided the music and Mr. H. Evans conducted the singing. Mr. J. McArthur (Buller National representative) gave a report on the recent conference held in Wellington. The chief item in the report was that dealing with working on back Saturdays during the Winter period. The report was adopted with the exception of an item limiting representation to the Federation of Labour Conference to less than the National Council membership. Up until this conference, the whole of the mem-
'bership attended. Had the representatives from the Grey and Buller districts been present, an outline of the proceedings could have been given to the membership when delegates were reporting the proceedings of the Miners’ Conference. The secretary of the Union was instructed to write to the relatives of the late Mr. Gannoiy and the late Mrs. Degnan, extending the sympathy of the organisation in their bereavement. The President and secretary gave an outline of recent proceedings re compensation claims on behalf of two members of the Union. The report was received as satisfactory. A letter from the General Workers’ Union re mine workers cutting flax in their spare time was discussed. It was de T cided to instruct mine workers that they must not continue this practice. It was reported that Messrs Devlin and McLagan would be paying a visit to the mines in the Buller district at the first available opportunity. According to a report from the delegate to the National Council, housing for the miners without homes will be provided subject to conditions as laid down by the Mines’ Department. A reply from the Minister of Mines re the sunply of fresh meat was not at all satisfactory. The Minister’s letter pointed out that a delivery of meat twice a week to the country district during the Winter period was all that would be allowed. Further negotiations on this vital question are taking place. Meat twice a week is not enough for workers producing coal
