GREY LABOUR PARTY
Northern Meeting
A meeting of the Greymouth branch of the Labour Party was held-in the Lyceum Hall on the Ist. instant, Mr J. B. Kent presiding, the attendance was surprisingly large in view of the cold weather, it peing evident the members are enthusiastic and keep themselves well informed on current events. Mrs F. Harvey presented the branch with a framed portrait of her late husband, Mr Harry Harvey. The president, in accepting it, made feeling reference to the many good qualities; sterling character and unswerving loyalty to the party shown by the late Mr Harvey. He said the portrait would serve to keep green his memory. Several other members spoke in a similar strain. A letter was received requesting support for a drive to obtain worthwhile books for the soldiers. It was pointed out that such periodicals as Penquin Specials, Readers’ Digests, books by Douglas Reed, foreign correspondents. etc. were in keen demand by the troops here and overseas. It was decided to lend all assistance, the secretary, Miss M. Anderson, 10 Puketahi St., stating she would be pleased to collect any such books and forward them for distribution, and any persons having readable books may get in touch with Miss Anderson. Mr P. O'Farrell raised the question of rehabilitation, and pointed out that afforestation, on the West Coast demanded attention. He considered this question was a national one, as timber was a vital asset to the country. It was stated the matter had already been taken up by the Rehabilitation Board. The president gave interesting information regarding the project for a deep sea harbour in this district, and in a discussion which followed, it became evident the party supported in principle the proposed construction of such a harbour. All members were deeply interested in the whole question of rehabilitation, it being evident the Government would receive wholehearted support in the steps it takes in this direction. It was stated that Mr M. Moohan. the chairman of the Board, would visit this district, and that efforts are being made to have him address a public meeting on this very important subject, and it is to be hoped all sections of the community will turn up to hear him. It was decided to call a special meeting of the party and all supporters for the purpose of setting up an Election Committee on Tuesday, June 29, the party relying on all members to attend, when a hearty welcome will be extended to all sympathisers and supporters. It was pointed out that Labour must be kept in office if the rehabilitation plan is to succeed and a strong committee will be set up to ensure the return of Labour in this dsitrict.
The question of a publicity committee being set up to supply the “Argus” with material that will be of help to Labour’s cause was keenly discussed, and the following were appointed: Messrs O’Farrell, Scott, Kent, P. Blanchfield junr. and J. Finlay. Efforts will be made to en-. rol new members and collect funds for the coming election. Here is a chance for the workers to show their appreciation of the Labour Government, join the party and help financially in the coming fight. Remember, the Labour Government is your Government—rally round it! The “Argus” is your paper—support it! Mr Worker and Mr Working Farmer and Mr Small Business Man —step forward and help! Remember this: Our boys went overseas to .fight so you may retain your good conditions and freedom —don’t let them down—rally round Labour’s banner!
