THE DIVISIONS. AUCKLAND, June 2. Ow'ino- to there being very large fields in the Jervois Handicap on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, it has been divided into two separate races. Provision has had to be made for divisions also in both of these races, and also in the Cornwall Handicap and in the Members’ Handicap. BREEDER’S DEATH. Mr. Edward Gates, horse breeder and farmer, died in Christchurch on Monday, aged 83 years. During his career, Mr. Gates contributed many-well-known horses to racing in New Zealand. Among them were Lady Zetland and Lady Lilian. Another notable performer was Minerval, which won the Auckland Cup in .1933. Lady Leigh and Knight Commander Were also well-known horses bred by Mr. Gates. Mr. Gates came to New Zealand in 1880 in the sailing ship Rangitiki. He brought with him the two mares Forget-Me-Not, and Miss Kate. Later he went to Ashburton and managed the Maronan estate for Messrs Wilkin and Carter. On the death of Mr. Carter he purchased the property, and undertook the breeding of racehorses. Subsequently he was farming at Buccleugh, Mount Somers. and later at Amberley. When Lady Lilian won both the Great Easter and the Great Autumn in 1903. Mr. Gates supported her at 100 to 1 to the extent of £lO,OOO. She duly'won both races and he received his cheque for £lO,OOO on the following day by post.
