RUNANGA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) The Runanga Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. The Mayo/ (Mr. E. Kennedy) presided, and there were also present: Councillors S. O’Neill, A. Auld, C. Barrow and -. Luff. The Health Department reported that the analysis of a sample of water taken from the borough reservoir disclosed that the water contained chlorides and albuminous nitrogen, which is due to organic matter. The foreman (Mr. T. Merriman) said that this condition recurred in the- autumn, when water was not being drawn off. Immediately the report was received he cleaned out the reservoir. A fresh sample had meen taken, and he was awaiting the report. The water Irom the. pipes was now much clearer. The Minister of Marine (Mr. O’Brien) acknowledged the'Council’s representations regarding a deep sea harbour at Point Elizabeth, stating that the proposal would be consider-, ed when the matter was being discussed. The Minister for Mines (Mr. Webb) wrote similarly. The Secretary of the Runanga committee for the Miss Russia Queen

wrote asking for the free use of the Gymnasium during the campaign.— Granted. The foreman reported that 26 loads of gravel and 14 of spoil had been carted, that the grader had been employed on five days, and that drams in Duncan, Hall Jones, and Mill streets had been cleaned. The railings of the bridges in Herd and Duncan streets had been repaired and the concrete sides of the new bridge in Ward Street erected. The necessary protective work at Raleigh creek near the police station had been conipleted with the assistance of the police constable. Ten 12-inch and 10 24inch concrete pipes have been made. The Railway Department have been connected to the water supply at Dunollie for the purpose of supplying railway locomotives. The intake, reservoir and sluices had been cleaned out. At the request of the Power Board, trees in McGowan Street interferring with the power’ lines havebeen cut back. There is one Scheme 13 worker on the Domain and two in ■the Borough. A load of waste paper and old ty/res has been carted to Grevmouth for disposal for patriotic funds. Mr. Bertacco was injured and is still off work.—The report was received as satisfactory. It was decided, on the motion of Crs. Barrow and Auld, that the remaining Scheme 13 worker on the Domain be employed on the Dunollie Domain on the completion of the work in hand . Cr. O’Neil objected to the action of the Mayor in authorising the purchase of a new engine for the Borough lorry, without bringing the matter before the Council. The- Maylpr said that the engine in the lorry gave out suddenly, and there was no alternative but to get another, and to do so quickly. Any delay would have held up the work of the Borough. A reconditioned motor had been purchased. Mrs. Henderson and Messrs R. McTaggart, T. Bowes and A. Winstanley, representing the Runanga Golf Club waited on the Council to discuss tne maintenance of the Club’s links at the Domain. Mr. McTaggart said that the Club had spent over £lOO for a mower and in other ways, but could not afford to keep a man on the ground to maintain it, and unless it was at-, tended to regularly, it soon became unplayable, as it was at present. It was decided, on the motion of Crs. Luff and Auld, that the Council engage' a man immediately to put the ground in order for immediate play, and that endeavours be made to secure another Scheme 13 worker to maintain the ground. On the motion of Crs. Barrow and O’Neil it was decided to apply to the Social Security Department for the services of another Scheme 13 worker to replace one who has recently gone off the scheme, pointing out that there are two citizens in the town, unable to secure permanent work, and capable of doing the required maintenance work at the Domain. It was further decided to ask one of the employees to take charge of the Gymnasium Hall, and keep the building in order. Arrangements for a case for the piano were- left to Cr. Lutt. A motion by >Cr.
