Dr ,B. L. Wilson left on return to Christchurch yesterday.

Mr. J. Stokes left yesterday for Christchurch. .

Mr. E. Latimer left for Ghiistchurch yesterday -to attend a conte ence of railway E.P.S. officials.

Mr. J. Ward has been re-elected chairman of the Buller County Council for the third Near.

Mr. W. Hannan, of the Greymouth railway clerical staff, has received notification of transfer to the. Wellington Booking Office. He will be replaced bv Mr. C. R. Baker, stationmaster at Glenhope.

A London cablegram stated that Rev. Barton Babbage, of Wanganui, assistant chaplain-in-chief, K-A.r., was married to Flight Officer J. E. King, W.A.A.F., Bachelor of Science (Economics) of Camberley. Professor A. H. Tocker .was yesterdawl appointed rector of Canterbury ' University College for three years from March 1, 1943, or until such earlier time as a permanent acedemic head is appointed.

Mr H. Rattray, who has been president of the West Coast Swimming Centre for a number of years, was tendered a farewell by the members of the Centre on Monday evening. Mr F. W. Baillie, Mr Rattray’s, successor, presented Mr Rattray with, a pipe and pouch on behalf of the members and conveyed to him the regret of members at his departure. Mr Rattray will leave this week for Christchurch, where he will reside.

A London cable stated: The Secretary of State for the Colonies has approved of the appointment ot Ratu (chief) J. L. V. Sukuna as Adviser on Native Affairs in Fiji. Sukuna. was educated at Wanganui and at Wadham College, Oxford He joined the Foreign Legion in the last war, and went to France. He returned to Oxford after the war Subsequently} he was called to the bar. He was the first Fijian to be appointed, a District Commissioner. Mr. S. Schofield, the newlyt-elected president of the Workers’ Educational Association in Canterbury, is the first former student of the' Association to become president. Mr. Schofield had been vice-president since 1999 He joined the W.E.A. classes in" 1922 and later was a lecturer to economic classes. Since 1926 he has renresented the Canterbury branch ot the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants on the district council ot the W.E.A. The following are guests at the Albion Hotel: Messrs J. E.
