"GATE TO CHUNGKING”
CHUNGKING, May 30
A Chinese communique stated: Chinese forces have recaptured xuiaungkwan and killed 1000 Japanese in the operation. Chinese forces are closely pursuing enemy remnants, which are retreating north-eastwards towards Niekchiaho, seven miles south of the Yangtse. , _ '• The communique adds: Chinese operating in the Kingman-Tangyang-Ichang sector, on the north shore of the Yangtse, have gained ground. Fighting is increasing in intensity on the heights overlooking the river opposite Ichang. The recapture of Yuauangkwan, which has been described as the gate to Chungking, eliminates the main threat against the Chinese capital. The Chinese National Military Council stated the Chinese success marked the turning point in the Yangtse Valley battle. The Japanese casualties have risen to 2000, and the Chinese have captured a huge quantity of booty. JAPANESE CLAIMS. LONDON, May 30. The Tokio official radio claims that the Japanese forces west of Lake Tungting have occupied Taiyungtang, the S'inen headquarters of the Chinese 161st Division and Tangyang, near Ichang. JAPANESE ADVANCE (Rec. 1.5) LONDON, May 31. The Chungking Central News Agency states: It is reported that Japanese forces are now. 35 miles from Chaigteh, which Chinese civilians are evacuating.
