GOLDMINING

OKARITO. Okarito Dredge wash-up for the week ended Saturday, was 57 oz. 4 dwt., for 119 hours’ dredging. GILLESPIE’S Gillespie’s Beach dredge resumed last Thursday. RIMU FLAT. The return last week for Rimu Flat dredge was 322 ozs. 11 dwts. for 1231 hours’ work, from 49,537 yards of material treated. THESIS ON WEST COAST MINERALOGY. The Westland Provincial Organisation of the New Zealand Centennial is prepared to receive up to the 31st. March, 1939, addressed to the Hon. Secretary, P.O. Box 64, Hokitika, papers on the mineralogy of the West Coast of the South Island. The organisation offers prizes of thirty guineas and fifteen guineas, respectively, for the two papers awarded first and second, and being considered the best essays on tne mining industry of the West Coast district, South Island. The geology of the deposits should be reviewed, the past and present position of the industry summarised, and suggestions for the future development discussed. The Director of the N.Z. Geological Survey will judge the essays which must be in the Secretary’s hands at the above address, not later than the 31st March, 1939. The papers should bd type-written on one side of the paper only, and be signed only by a motto The name and address of the writer to be enclosed in a separate sealed envelope, which will be opened in the presence of the Mayor of Hokitika, after the judge’s award is received, when the result will be notified publicly. The organisation reserves the right to publish the winning essays in connection with the Centennial publications, and may puolish, also, extracts from the other essays received.
