WEST U.S.A. CHAMPIONSHIP. - CLEVELAND, September 20. In the Western Golf Championship play-off, Guldahl defeated Horton Smith by 72 to 76. AUSTRALIAN TEAM. [Per Press Association]. AUCKLAND, September 20. The value of competition betvyeen women golfers of Australia and New Zealand, was emphasised by Miss L. Wray, manager and captain of the Australian Women’s representative team which arrived in Auckland by the Mariposa. The visiting team, which, in addition to Miss Wray, comprises Mrs. Sloan Morpeth, Miss E. M. Hutton,' Miss B. Kernot, Miss Shirley Tolhurst, and Miss B. Cheney, will meet the New Zealand women’s representatives in the Tasman Cup contest at Napier on October 6.

Miss Wray said that a surprise feature in the selection of the Australian team was that all five players were Victorians. Miss Wray, does not intend to play on the present tour unless it is absolutely necessary. She won the first of her three national championships 30 years ago. and her most recent one in 1929. The best-known member of the team is Mrs. Sloan Morpeth (formerly Miss Susie Tolhurst), who has won two Australian and five Victorian titles. One of the best shot-makers and longest hitters in Australian women’s golf. Miss Hutton, is also expected to attract considerable interest during the tour. Sound and determined, Miss Kernot has an impressive championship record. She holds the titles of the Geelong and Metropolitan Clubs, and was the 1936 champion of champions in Victoria. She won the Australian women’s title this year. Miss Tolhurst is also a Victorian title holder, and has competed in several semifinals for the championship. Accurate putting is the forte of Miss Cheney, who was the 1935 girl champion of Victoria and 1936 girl champion of South Australia. The handicaps of the visitors are:—Miss Wray 7, Mrs Morpeth 3, Miss Hutton 3, Miss Kernot 3, Miss Tolhurst 2, and Miss Cheney 5. The playe.rs_will for Napier to-morrow.
