REEFTON NOTES

LOur Own Correspondent]. REEFTON, September 20. An accident occurred on the New Creek-Lyell road on Saturday night, when two motor cars met at a sharp turn. To prevent a collision, one ran on to the side and toppled over. Two young ladies in the car were brought into Reefton Hospital, Miss Iris Pupich with'A. fractured jaw, and Mrs. Manly, suffering from shock. The latter, however, was able to return to her home at Lyell yesterday, but Miss Pupich will receive skilled attention for some days. The death occurred on Saturday in Christchurch at the Convent of Our Lady of the Missions of Sister M. St. Sylvester, a native of the West Coast, and a sister of Mr. C. Nevin, of Reefton. The deceased was born at Brighton, and was 48 years of age. She was for some years a member of the Nelson community of her Order, and for the past three years of that in Christchurch, whore she had been for some time past in failing health. Messrs Patrick Nevin (West-i port) and Thomas Nevin (Napier), are also brothers of the deceased, who is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. T. McMahon (Cronadun) and Mrs. Connolly (Runanga). Warm rain commenced to tall here last evening, and continued this morning. As a result, a great deal of the snow on the ranges has been melted, which should lessen the chances of further frosts.

The death took place at Reefton Hospital on Saturday of Mr. Oliver T. Griffiths, a well known and respected resident of Soldiers’ Road, Reefton, who arrived in the Dominion 35 years ago. Deceased, who had been a sufferer from miner’s phthisis for many years, entered Reefton Hospital less than a fortnight ago. He was a native of Williamstown, Victoria, and 58 years of age. He was a member of the Oddfellows’ Lodge. He worked in the principal mines of the Inangahua. The late Mr. Griffiths is survived by a widow, one son and one daughter, and has several brothers and sisters. The funeral took place this afternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. C. E. Dickens of the Methodist Church in the presence of a large number. A basketball knock-out tourney for the Crossman Cup took place on Saturday, when teams from the following Clubs took part: Stars (Ikamatua), School, United and Old Girls A. and B. The Cup was won by the Old Girls A, with School the runnersup. The Cup was previously held by. the Ahaura Club, which on this occasion did not send a team. A windup dance was held in the Band Room in the evening and was largely attended.
