TOO MANY PARLIAMENTS
13 HOUSES IN AUSTRALIA. REPLY TO MR. SEMPLES’ COMMENT. [Per Press Association]. AUCKLAND, September 20. “I hear your Mr. Semple has been saying that he could not understand why we had State Governments in Australia, instead of a centralised authority,” said Hon. M. F. Bruxner. Deputy-Premier of New South Wales, on his arrival by the Aorangi. He was referring to a statement reported to have been made by Mr. Semple, after his recent visit to Aus-». tralia. I
“It would have been better had Mr. Semple taken into consideration the facts, before he spoke. What he did not pause to think was that, while New Zealand has a population of 1,500,000, New South Wales alone has a population of 2,500,000, with an area of 300,000 square miles. Its Budget totals £60,000,000 annually, compared with New Zealand’s £40,000,000, so if Mr. Semple finds his own job full time in New Zealand, what must it be in each of the Australian States? Moreover, New South Wales is growing, and will be a bigger place I han New Zealand ever will.”
