Dewar Cup i A DRAWN GAME. The week-end proved a busy one in local football circles. On Saturday, under ideal conditions, the visiting Nomads’ team succeeded in drawing with Tech. Old Boys, while yesterday they tried conclusions with Runanga. At Christchurch the Junior Representative Team, which had undergone several changes, put up a fine performance in drawing with Canterbury. The draw enabled Canterbury to retain the trophy. Of the six matches now played, each province has won two games while the other two have been drawn. CANTERBURY I—WESTLAND 1. This game was played as a curtainraiser to the English Cup final between Thistle and Western. The teams were:— Westland: —J. Perrin; R. Lee, H. Hogg; P. Hoggarth, L. Balderstone, W. Paton; J. O’Donnel, G. Erskine, G. McLean,- J. Kerr, J. Paton. Canterbury:—L. McKenzie; T. Evans, D. Mitchell; F. Stout, W. Todd, A. Golding; P. Nelson, A. Madden, W. McNulty, J. Smith, R. Smith. Canterbury kicked off with a strong wind and sun in their favour. Play hovered for a spell in the Westland half where Lee, Balderstone and W. Paton were prominent in stemming many promising attacks. Another Canterbury attack looked more likely with Stout, Madden and Smith in the van, but Perrin fisted clear. Westland now took up the attack, Paton, Kerr and Erskine showing up in a fast rush. O’Donnell nullified the advantage by crossing wide on two occasions. Canterbury forced Westland back but did not look dangerous. Half-time sounded with no score. On resuming, both teams were slow in settling down, though Westland looked dangerous in two quick breakaways. Westland came again, Kerr and Paton combining well to cover the length, of the field, but Evans brought off a fine save. Canterbury retaliated and R. Smith drove narrowly past. The home team kept up tne pressure and Golding placed the ball nicely to the Westland goalmouth, where Perrin saved brilliantly. The Westland backs at this stage suffered their first lapse which cost a goal. Madden diverted a pass to J. Smith, who ran in to score from close quarters. Canterbury 1, Westland 0. The Westland backs continued to do good work but the Westland van like the Canterbury one, did not seem able to combine, though individually the forwards all played well. Hogg now came into the forwards and Westland narrowly missed opening their account when he caught McKenzie in possession. The keeper experienced „considerable .difficulty in throwing the ball clear. Westland came again, Hogg securing to race past the backs and score a good goal. Full-time sounded shortly after with'

the score: Canterbury I—Westland 1. After the game, Mr. J. E. Jones, President of the C.F.A., presented the Cup to F. Stout, Captain of the Canterbury side. J. Paton, Captain of the Westland team, congratulated Canterbury on retaining possession of the Cup.

NOMADS 3—TECH. OLD BOYS 3. The teams were:— Tech. Old Boys:—Henderson; Armstrong, Bernard; Larking, Bowman, Adamson; Dalzell, Wood, Watson, Cruse, Smyth. Nomads:—-Smith; O’Brien, O’Brien; Calder, Fail, Lee, Stanton, Barrie, Rossiter, Cullen, Wilson. Oldk Boys winning the toss, Nomads kicked off facing the sun and a light breeze. The opening exchanges were even with both defences conceding fruitless corners. Old Boys gradually assumed control by opening up to the wings, but the inside forwards failed to make use of good opportunities of opening the score. During one likely attack, Watson was unfortunate when a fine left-foot drive rebounded from the Upright. Nomads took play into Old Boys’ territory, but Armstrong sent them back. Bowman was playing a fine game at centre-half for Old Boys and the Nomad forwards were finding it difficult to penetrate far. Adamson opened up play to Smyth, who crossed wr the inside forwards to miss an easy chance. Watson next broke through to give Cruse an easy chance, but he shot wide. Again Cruse missed when Smith just succeeded in pushing out a high shot from Smyth. Shortly after, Cruse made amends when Smyth placed a corner-kick almost under the cross-bar. Old Boys 1, Nomads 0. Fail was conspicuous in opening up play for the visitors, but the forwards failed to make use of the ball. Smith was soon in action again bringing off a fine double save. Old Boys were not to be denied and another good cross by Smyth was accepted by Wood who scored with a fine shot. Old Boys 2, Nomads 0. Undismayed by this further reverse, Nomads rushed to the attack, but a by-kick brought relief. The Tech, forwards broke through but the keeper made a fine save from the three inside forwards. Further' attacks saw the ball driven past twice in succession. The Nomad forwards combined in a good move, Stanton finally crossing to Rossiter, who, from close range, easily slipped the ball past Henderson. Old Boys 2, Nomads 1.

From a corner by Smyth, the keeper was again beaten, but O’Brien rushed into goal to clear. Half-time sounded with the score: Old Boys 2, Nomads 1. On resuming, scrambling mid-fieid play followed until Tech, forced a fruitless corner. Nomads rushed play to the other end, where Henderson made a good save from Stanton. Old Boys returned to the attack for Smith to clear well. Nomads were now keeping the ball on the move and were soon back into Tech, territory.

Wilson received and from well out, made the scores level. Old Boys 2, Nomads 2. Enlivened by this success, Nomads kept up the pressure. Henderson dived full length to save a piledriver from Cullen, but before he could get the ball away, Barrie had it through the goal. Old Boys 2, Nomads 3. Old Boys attacked with determination and Smith just succeeded in pushing the ball out to Smyth, who goaled. The referee, thinking the ball had gone outside the post, awarded a by-kick. Henderson made a good save in the face of the Nomad forwards and cleared with a nice kick. Dalzell made a good run and crossed accurately for Watson to collect and even the scores. Old Boys 3, Nomads 3. Both sides attacked in turn in endeavours to notch the deciding goal. Stanton had a good opportunity, but with only the keeper to beat, shot wide. Bowman sent his forwards away and it was only smart work by Smith that kept them out. Fulltime sounded with the score: Old Boys 3, Nomads 3. RUNANGA 8 v. NOMADS 3. A good crowd witnessed the match between Runanga and Nomads at the Runanga Domain yesterday. The weather conditions were favourable, but a misty shower caused the players some concern during the early part of the game. After a one-sided game Runanga ran out easy winners by 8 goals to 3. Scorers for the winners were Scott (3), White (2), Maskill, Shotten, Crowe. For Nomads Collins, Wilson and Smith each netted a goal. CHRISTCHURCH, September 18. Western beat Thistle, 3—l, in a fast, open game, at English Park today, to retain the English Cup, the senior grade Soccer knock-out trophy. Although over-keenness spoiled many good movements, play was interesting all through, and the sound opening pace never flagged.
