Signor Mussolini has ordered a monument to the late Marchese Marconi, to be built at Rome; also the establishment of a fund fbr scholarships for boys studying radio, and to help need!}' wireless telegraphists. Sir Samuel Hoare, continuing his visits to prisons, flew yesterday from Norfolk to Devonshire, and inspected the Dartmoor convict prison. He found the prison comparatively 1 empty, for the present population at Dartmoor is less than 300—one of the lowest figures on record. Thirty years ago there were 1,200 prisoners there. Sir S. Hoare had several talks with convicts, and examined their work, food, exercise, and cells. He also inspected and addressed a parade of prison officials. “THE WEN.” RUGBY, September 15. More than £1,500,000 has already been spent in the Middlesex area under London’s green belt scheme. The county council will promote a private bill at the next session of Parliament to secure the preservation in perpetuity of the 8,000 acres thus acquired. EARL BALDWIN. RUGBY, September 15. Earl Baldwin, before leaving Aix-les-Bains to continue his holiday in Switzerland, was presented with the freedom of that city. Arrangements are now complete for the ceremony on November 5, when Lord Baldwin will be presented with an address by the City of London. Guiseppi Tallarico, who claims to have discovered petroleum in Calabria, Southern Italy. Signor Tallarico presented Signor Mussolini with a small Bottle of oil, which he declared was of excellent quality. Signor Tallarico is a deputy in the Italian Parliament, and is a noted biologist. It is reported that a company will be formed to exploit the deposit. LONDON, September 17. An electrical storm over the Cardington airship works set fire to ten balloons which were aloft in connection with the experimental anti-air-craft barrage scheme for use in wartime. All were consumed before reaching the ground, though the near approach of one balloon to a tent caused the occupants to run for their lives. The League Council has decided to send a neutral committee to Palestine to examine with Arab and Jewish representatives the best means of partitioning Palestine. VIENNA, September 17. , A battalion of infantry, firemen, and police, vainly fought a fire in the rotunda of Vienna’s Crystal Palace, which was built in 1873 for an international exhibition. The damage amounted to £250,000. BUENOS AIRES, September 18. The official estimate of the Argentine wheat area sown for the 1937-8 crop is 17,593 thousand acres. THE HAGUE, September 17. The Dutch East Indian Government is expected to give an early decision regarding air bases in Java, the expenses of whose construction it may defray.
