Miss Collinson who has been the guest of Mrs. W. Robertson, Seddon Street, Runanga, has returned to Christchurch.

The death occurred yesterday, after a short illness, of Geoffrey Edward, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Boddy, High Street. Deceased was aged 11 months.

Mr. Ron Williams, Gillespies Beach was a successful candidate in the recent examinations conducted by the Public Works Department for the efficient and safe use of high explosives and by the department for excavations etc.

A cable from Brisbane states that the former international cricketer, Oxenham, was taken to hospital with a fractured skull, and concussion, as the result of a motor car accident while he and a company were motoring to the first grade cricket match of the season.

A cable from Washington says that the United States State Department has announced the opening of a Consulate at Perth, in Western Australia, due to that area’s growth in commercial importance, and Mr. C. Derry has been appointed to the post. He is at present. United States Consul at Mazatlan, in Mexico.

The death took place at Reefton of Mr. Oliver T. Griffiths who had resided in the Inangahua district for the past 35 years. The late Mr. Griffiths who was born in Victoria Australian 58 years ago, was for many years a member of the M.U.1.0.0. F. Lodge. He had for some years suffered with miners’ phthisis. He leaves beside his wife one son and a daughter. The funeral takes place to-day, leaving the late residence of deceased. Soldiers’ Road at 2 p.m. for the Reefton Suburban Cemetery

Canon W. S. Bean, who was vicar of Addington from 1892 to 1933, a record period of service in one parish in the Canterbury Diocese, will celebrate his eightieth birthday today. Canon Bean, except, for a visit of seven months to England in 1905, has spent 79 years of his life in New Zealand. Canon Bean was married in 1891 to the eldest daughter of the Rt. Hon R. J. Seddon. There is a family of five daughters and a son, Mr. R. J. S. Bean, a tea planter in Ceylon.

The death occurred last evening of Mr. John Watt Dunlop of the Commercial Hotel at the advanced age of 91 years. Deceased was born in Edinburgh coming to New Zealand 86 years ago. He spent most of his life in Queenstown. In the past 26 years he had resided in Greymouth. His late brother’ Charles, died 12 years ago. A single man, deecased leaves two nieces, Mesdames L. Wilson (Commercial Hotel) and F. Higgins (Cobden). Mrs. J. McGurk (Cobden) is a sister-in-law. The funeral leaves the Commercial Hotel at 1.30 p.m. to-day for the Kororo Cemetery.

Many tributes to the value of the services of Mr. F. E. O’Flynn, retiring head, master of the Hornby school, were paid by representatives of the school committee, the parents, pupils, staff and old pupils of the school, and residents of the Hornby district. Mr. O’Flynn, is retiring after nearly twelve years at Hornby and fifty in the teaching profession. A presentation of a wallet and cheque was made Mr. O’Flynn by Mr. F. McTigue, chairman of the school committee, and gifts were also made to Miss Helen O’Flynn and Miss Nina O’Flynn. A special presentation was made to Mr. O’Flynn by the pupils.

West Coast boxing votaries will greatly regret to learn of the sudden death yesterday morning at Wellington of Mr. Earl (Mick) Stewart, the well-known boxing referee, who officiated here at the recent New Zealand Championships. Deceased, who was about 50 years of age, and unmarried, conducted an accountancy business at Wellington. He was perhaps the best known referee of amateur boxing in the Dominion, and olliciated at three championship meetings here, and at many others elsewhere. Mr. Stewart had a seizure yesterday with fatal effect. Mr. A. Beban (President of the West Coast Boxing and Wrestling Associate n), who is to-day proceeding to Wellington to be present at the funeral of deceased, stated Mr. Stewart was a true sport, who had done very much for boxing, and he (Mr. Beban) had always endeavoured to have Mr. Stewart as first referee for the Championships here. Mr. Stewart had a creditable war service record, and had been delegated on one occasion to engage American boxers for botits in New Zealand. It was always a pleasure for him to visit the West

Coast, where a host of friends would deplore his unexpected demise.

The death occurred at the residence of his son Mr. Burns Scandrett, Fox Street Cobden, yesterday morning of Mr. George Scandrett a well-known resident of Westport and Greymouth after a brief illness. The late Mr. Scandrett, who was born at Auckland 59 years ago was a member of the New Zealand Police Force for 27 years, having served at Invercargill, Dunedin, Gore and Middlemarch. He rose to the rank of Sen-ior-Sergeant, and resigned from the force some 11 years ago to enter business in Westport. For the past five years, he has in addition, conducted his well-known Dominion Fish Supply and Cafe in Boundary Street and Tainui Street, in addition to a similar business in Westport. Mr. Scandrett was the owner of a number of fishing trawlers including the Annabella and Helena. Deceased is survived by his wife, six sons Hector, (Westport, Donald, Malcolm, and Allan (Greymouth), George (Invercargill) and Burns (Cobden) also onedaughter Miss Helena Scandrett, Greymouth. He leaves in addition one brother Hector, and two sisters, Mesdamcs G. Taylor and J. Driver, all of whom reside in Auckland. The interment which will be private will take place at Karoro Cemetery this afternoon.
