Travellers on the Middle railway over the week-end noted the first of the new type of G 96 railway engine built at the Mill side workshops, Dunedin, for the ChristchurchArthurs Pass section. She has had a couple of trial runs with 400 ton loads. The engine did not develope much power on the first trial, as adjustments were required, but Saturday’s trial was satisfactory.

Appointments of teachers for West Coast schools were confirmed by the Canterbury Education Board at its monthly meeting as follows: —Kokatahi Miss E. J. Millner, head teacher; Rotomanu, Miss R. E. Jones, sole teacher; Taylorville, Mr. A. E. Mahon, head teacher. The resignation was received of Mr. F. E. O’Flynn head teacher at Hornby, formerley of Runanga. Harley and Co. The motor-pump engine which the Greymouth Fire Brigade is obtaining, was used bn Friday at Lyttelton foi a demonstration. The Lyttelton Borough Council has decided to obtain a similar engine, and the one demonstrated was favourably commented on. Pumping was carried out on the waterfront with sea water and in the upper portion of the town, where the water pressure is not as great as in the lower mains.
Four inward and two outward excursion trains conveying in ail nearly 1500 passengers were handled at the Greymouth railway station yesterday. Two Corsair Bay Club Excursion. trains arrived early yesterday morning from Christchurch conveying over 800 passengers, many of whom proceeded to Hokitika and Lake Mahinapua where a pleasant day was spent. The excursionists who proceeded to Christchurch foi the Canterbury—Coast match on Saturday returned yesterday afternoon trains arriving shortly before 2 o’clock and at 2.45 p.m. The Corsair excursion trains left at 7.10 and 7.30 o’clock last evening on return to Christchurch.
