HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, September 17. The death, after a brief illness,"■of Mr. William McMullan, brewer for Messrs R. Ford and Co., occurred at the Westland Hospital this morning, ueceased, who was 51 years of age, and a native of Hokitika, was formerly in the employ of Pearn’s brewery at Kumara, but had been with Ford and Co. since their brewery here was established. He leaves, besides his wife, a family of twelve, six daughters and six sons. The daughters are Mesdames J. Maine, G. O'Brien, W. Wells, Misses Tessie, Maureen and Eileen McMullan (all of Hokitika), and the sons are William, Henry, Patrick, Albert, Kevin and nobert, all of Hokitika. Mr. Harry McMullan, of Hokitika, and formerly of Ross, is a brother of deceased. In his annual departmental report on the Hokitika Mental Hospital, the Superintendent, Dr. Childs, states that at the commencement of 1936, patients on the register of the institution numbered 418, as compared with 458 at the end of the year. The health of the patients generally has been good. The usual routine of farming operations has been carried out. A monthly clinic has been held at Greymouth, and occasional visits paid to the Westland Hospital. The report states that consideration is being given to the reconstruction of the kitchen stores block at Hokitika, the present building now being inadequate for the increased number of
patients. It is intended to erect two new villas to house fifty patients of each sex.
The Inter-Wanganui Dairy Company’s annual report states 7,233 boxes of butter were exported, all graded finest, and 81 per cent, securing the premium of an eighth of a penny per lb. for grading 94 points or over. Local sales substantiallj' increased. The Company has bought a 55 box capacity churn and a boring plant, running a good supply of water. The Company has the assurance of being retained as a manufacturing unit. On butterfat received during the first quarter of the season, Is per lb. was advanced,- and lid per lb. for the remainder of the season. A bonus of 2d brings the total for finest grade to 13d per lb., and the average to 12.984 d on all grades. The appropriation account shows a surplus oi £4,973 0s Od, which the directors propose to distribute as follows: A further payment of two pence per .pound on butterfat received during (ho season and payment of 3 per cent, interest on paid up capital. Tho retiring directors eligible for re-elec-tion, are Mr. A. Sutherland, Mr. Geo. Manship and Mr. P. S. Hansen. At their meeting here yesterday, shareholders in the new West land Cooperative Dairy Co. elected as Directors Messrs M. Wallace, S. Smith, W. A. Jamieson, J. Monk and N Harris (Kokatahi—-Koiterangi); C Cook (Arahura), J. Thompson <Ross) and .1. Martin (Wailaha). Addresses were given by Messrs D. J. Evans (who presided), M. Wallace and W. a. Jamieson. The Directors later elected Mr. M. Wallace as Chairman. The Aero Club at its annual meeting, elected officers as fonows: Patron, Jas. O’Brien, M.P.; President, Father O’Gorman; Vice-Presidents, Messrs P. Renton, J. J. Mclntosh, J. S. Langford and H. T. Parry. Club captain, A. Johnson; Vice Club Captain, H. Lawn; Secretary, L. H. Parry; Executive Committee, Mrs. J. Langford, Miss A. Mclntosh, Messrs H. T Parry, H. Preston, J. Templeton and J. Stuart; Hon. Auditor, P. L. Renton. The balance sheet showed a credit of £22 10s lOd. It was decided to obtain a site for a new hangar with an entrance 40 ft. by 10 ft., and to alter the present hangar so as to house the new Tiger-Moth biplane which the Government is to provide for training. Another TigerMoth was also expected. The local Red Cross Sub Centre, at a meeting, elected sub-committees as follows —Junior Red Cross: Sister Gillespie, Misses Dale and Parlane, Messrs Warren and Agnew. Home Nursing Classes: Mrs. G. A. Perry, Matron Anderson, Sister Gillespie, Mrs. Fane, Miss Dale and Mrs. Thompson. Classes are to commence at the Nurses’ Home at 6.45 p.m. on Tuesday, September 28. Relief Sub-Committee: Chairman, Secretary, Mrs. Fane and Mr. T. W. Duff. First Aid Committee: Messrs Hardy, Lewton, Agnew and King. It was also decided to appoint Matron Anderson, Sister Gillespie and Doctors Wilson, Aitken, Childs and Corban as members of the executive, in addition to Messrs P. R. Whitford, G. Kennedy, S. King, T. W. Duff, H. W. R. Sweney, L. A. Lewton, F. Ashley, J. H. Hardy, A. Agnew and Mrs Fane, who were present at the meeting. The following fees were fixed: Membership, 2/6; class, 2/6; honorary members, 10/6. The Mayors of Ross and Kumara and th 6 Westland County Chairman, were appointed Hon. Members.
