U.S.A. EXPEDITION
MAKES 350 FEET ASCENT. A GREAT HULLABALOO ! [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received September 17, 8:40 p.m.) GRAND CANYON (Arizona), September 16. A signal fire at the top of Shiva Templa, which is a plateau rising to 4.500 feet, and which had been untrodden by man for at least 12,000 years, announced that nine scientists and five porters had conquered this “lost world.” The expedition, roped together, perilously groped its way for many hours up a perpendicular sandstone cliff, 350 feet high. Only essential supplies were taken, these including traps, in which it was hoped to ensnare animals that would be unknown to modern science. The expedition also carried instruments for the study of surviving forms of ice age vegetation. Food will be parachuted to them from ’planes.
