A London cablegram announced the marriage of Mr Wickham Steed (ex-editor of “The Times”) to Violet. daughter of the late Mr J. F. Mason and of Lady Evelyn Mason, and niece of the Earl of Crawford.
Miss Diana Oliver, of St. Margaret’s College, Dunedin, has had a Training College certificate granted without the necessity of sitting for the qualifying examination.
Sir Maurice Gwyer. the first Chief Justice to be appointed under the new Indian Constitution, which was inaugurated in May, has left London for India to assume his appointment. Official Wireless.
The funeral of the late William McDougall took place yesterday afternoon at the Karoro Cemetery, being largely attended. The services at deceased’s late residence, Kilgour Road, and at the graveside, were conducted by Rev. H. R. Fell.
The funeral of the late Leslie John Rowse, of Kptuku, took place yesterday afternoon at the Karoro Cemetery. The services at Holy Trinity Church and at the graveside were conducted by Rev. W. A. Gardyne (Hokitika), Mr J. Costello (Rapahoc), Mr D. Forbes (Rapahoe). Congratulations to the Hon. Mark Fagan on his re-appointment as a Member and as Leader of the Legislative Council were extended by the Council on Thursday afternoon, when tributes were paid by the Hon. W. W. Snodgrass to Mr Fagan's outstanding qualities and the way in which he had won the admiration and affection of his colleagues. On Thursday evening a large number of friends of Miss Ruby Meyer and Mr Eric Jones, whose marriage takes place this month, were entertained at t lie residence of Mr and Mrs W. Green, Perofti Street. The evening took the form of a gift evening and many beautiful and valuable presents were presented to the guests of honour. A dainty supper was servcl by Mrs Green, and all pre- . sent joined in wishing Miss Meyer ’ and Mr Jones health and happiness in married life.
The death occurred at Hamilton on Thursday night of the Rev. Donald Mclvor, of Raglan, aged 84 years. He was born in the Hebrides Islands. Scotland, and came to New Zealand as an infant. He was ordained as a minister of! the Presbyterian Church in 1903, and his first charge was Herbert (Otago). After some years he was transferred to Waverley, and in 1922 he took over the charge of Marton, a position he retained until failing health necessitated his retiring from the service two years ago. He then went to live with a daughter at Raglan. He is survived by his wife, one son, and three daughters.
Mr C. R. Knowles, who for a number of years has filled the position of secretary to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has been appointed private secretary Io the Leader of the Legislative Council, the Hon. Mark Fagan. Since joining the Government service in 1921, Mr Knowles has been associated with three successive Speakers of the House, his service including a term with the late Hon. Sir Frederic Lang, the whole of Sir Chas. Statham's term, and he had "been secretary to the Hon. W. E. Barnard for the past eighteen months. Mr Clive Morton, Auckland, succeeds Mr Knowles as secretary to the Speaker.
At a largely attended gathering of members of the Greymouth Club yesterday afternoon, Mr A. J. McDowall was farewelled. A number of apologies for absence were received. The president, Dr. J. F. C. Moore, who occupied the chair, referred to Mr McDowall’s good nature and his social attributes, and praised his work as a member of the club. Whilst all members were sorry to lose him from their ranks, they were pleased to know that promotion had come his way. Dr. Moore extended to Mr McDowall, his wife and family, best wishes for their happiness and prosperity in the North Island. He then presented the departing member with a solid silver cigarette case as a small token of members’ esteem. Drs. H. S. Ray, W. E. Bird, the Mayor (Mr W. Meldrum), Messrs L. McGlashan. T. F. Brosnan, K. E. Balchin, P. C. Heaphy, F. H. Denton, Sinclair Trotter, A. E. Prince, Geo. Ferguson, P. Wearne, J. H. Hart, Herb. Moore, H. J. Wickes. E. McDonnell. N. V. Lovell, and A. J. Fairmaid added their tributes and joined with Dr. Moore in wishing Mr McDowall success in his new home. Mr McDowall thanked members for their kindness during the time he had been a member of the club, and for their gift.
Best known for his hearty personality and wide interests in sporting activities, Mr Frank Dalton McGovern, the manager of the Auckland branch of the Bank of New South Wales (says an Auckland telegram), died yesterday morning in a private hospital at the age of 62 years. Mr McGovern underwent an operation on September 3. For a time he rallied, but later complications set in. Mr McGovern was educated at Wellington College, where he was captain of the school first fifteen for a number of years. He entered the service of the Bank of New South Wales at Christchurch in I(D4, and soon rose to the position of accountant at Auckland branch. He opened a n w branch at Newton, and was successively manager at Whangarei, Dannevirke, and Timaru. and assistantmanager at Auckland. He was appointed manager at Auckland in 1928. which position he held until the time of his death. In view of his long association with the bank, he was recently invitfed by his principals to make a tour of Australia, from which he returned to resume his duties in May this year. He was a member of the Auckland Racing Club and the
Glendowic Golf Club. He was also associated with the Northern and Auckland Clubs. He was a keen supporter of Rugby, golf and racing particularly, His death will be- widely regretted. Mr McGovern leaves a widow, but no children.
