GENERAL CABLES

[Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] VATICAN CITY, September 14. The police have solved the robbery which occurred on September 10, ascertaining that a cabinet-maker, who was attending to the. Chamberlain’s furniture, provided three burglars, who stole money and jewels worth £2OOO, with overalls similar to those of the Vatican workmen, and steered them past the guards. The cabinet-maker confessed and implicated his accomplices, after the police had searched his home, and found the money which he could not account for. A new fire alarm system, designed to eliminate false calls through technical faults, which cause about 9000 miles of needless running by fire engines each year, has undergone a satisfactory trial in an important. London area. An extension of the system to the whole of London is now likely. The new system is of the closed circut, code signalling type, in which all the apparatus—street boxes,

gongs, recorders, and battery— form a single series circuit. Pulling the handle of the box causes a code number to be punched on a tape machine at the fire station, making a permanent record. While the bell rings in the watch room the word “fire” is illuminated on a switchboard and red lamps flash. The Sydney Star (which reported an explosion on September 7) berthed in the Thames. The third engineer, Thomas Kenyon, was admitted to the hospital, with severe burns. Six greasers were slightly burnt. The explosion shook the ship, and blew one man ten feet into the air. Some of the crew at first thought the vessel had been torpedoed. It took an hour to subdue the fire. HOLLYWOOD, September 14.
