DROP IN VALUES Sheep aiul Cattle [Our Own Correspondent], CHRISTCHURCH, September 15. At Addington to-day, there was a fat cattle entry oi’ 520 head, making a good representative penning of heavy cattle. The market opened at a drop up to 25/- a head, but steadied to in the vicinity of 20s a head for heifers, a better class of cows being back by 10s. There was a good clearance at what must be considered good prices. The range of prices was: Extra prime heavy steers to £22 12s 6d; prime heavy steers £l6 to £l7 5; prime medium-weight steers, £l4 to £l5 15s; ordinary steers £lO 5s to £l3 ss; light steers £lO. Extra prime heifers, £l4 12s 6d; prime heifers, £lO 5s to £l2; medium heifers £7 5s to £9 15s; light heifers, £7; extra prime cows to £l4 2s 6d; prime cows, £8 15s to £lO ss; medium cows, £6 10s to £8 10s; light cows, £6 ss. Of veal, there was a medium entry of nondescript quality which made a good sale, the best runners selling to £8 16s .

The store sheep comprised a smaller entry than usual, being mostly ewes and lambs. These sold fairly well but showed a decline on last week’s rates. The sale was a slack one taken all over.

The fat sheep entry was larger than last week, approximately 4,750 of indifferent quality being penned, although there were a few trucks of good sheep the forward values were erratic, but there was a slight appreciation on last week’s sale for prime sheep. Lighter sorts were weaker by Is to Is 6cl. Ewes sold to 46s 7d.

The pork entry was of medium size and there was an excellent sale. Choppers were in medium supply and remained on a par with last week’s sale price. Bacon comprised a large entry, there being keen competition with further increases in prices. Choppers sold at £3 3s 6d to £4 9s 6d; light pork 38s 6d to 43s 6d; medium pork 46s 6d to 53s 6d; large pork 54s 6d to £3 12s 6d. The price per lb. was 8d to 81d. Light bacon sold at £3 11s 6d to £4 2s 6d; heavy £4 4s 6d to £5 9s 6d, the price per lb. being 6Sd to Bd.

In store pigs there was a small entry, the quality being good. There was a keen sale and an all round improvement.

Weaners sold at 13s to 2.'s; medium stores 20s to 30s; large stores 32s to 355; sows in pig £4 to £5 12s 6d
