Rosebery Races N.Z. HORSES IN ACTION. (Received September 15, 10.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 15. Having his first race for some time, Highborn won the Botany' Handicap at Rosebery' races to-day from Volwood and Billy' Boy. There were ten starters. Maestro ran third to Confab and Amberdale in the Rosebery' Handicap. Jamieson’s horses, Lynch Law, Country Party, Birthday 7 Boy, and Pharoah were raced in pairs at Rosebery7 between the races. Lynch Law was a trifle disappointing, covering five furlongs in 1.3. Pharoah and Birthday Boy covered six furlongs in 1.154. Both went better.

Racing Notes Mary Pratt: Mary Pratt is considered worth keeping on side from now on. Dunmanaway: Dunmanaway, the brother to Custos, is expected to carry the Dungarvan colours conspicuously later on. He is a big-built two-year-old, and will not be hurried. Worth Remembering: Irish Fiddle will bear remembering. Stud Hope: Stonyhurst-bred horses have a 100 per cent, record in the John Grigg Stakes, and Scuffle, a filly by Winning Hit —Scrimmage, is the stud hope next Saturday. Underrated: One of the most underrated horses in the land is Taitoru. How often has he been allowed to pay dividends out of all proportion to his form? High Class: Courtcraft is scheduled to have his first race in Australia in the Hill Stakes, 1 mile, at Rosei.ill to-morrow.

Wild Chase: Wild Chase will open his spring campaign at Ashburton to-morrow. Elegy: Elegy is working well at Riccarton. Riding Engagements: The following riding engagements are announced for the Avondale meeting:—T. Green, Palustre, Nordie Song, Lapidarian; H. Wiggins, Bachelor King; A. Tinker, Bechelor King (Guineas); F. E. Baker Lady Ruler; W. J. Broughton, Raepata; C. Waiters, High Quality (second day); L. Dulteu, High Sea; R. McTavish, Arvakur, Anion, Silver Glow; W. Stone, Hot Box; E. O’Brien, Te Poto; H. Turvey, Lap Up. Mollie Mac:

The two-year-old filly by Gainscouct by Minnikin, by Grand Knight, from Minsk, by Martian, who will be trained by R. S. Bagby for Mr A. H. Long, has been registered as Mollie Mac. Minnikin is a half-sister to Caviare, the dam of Rona Bay and to Carinthia and Currajong, but she never raced.

Similarity of Names: Two similar names have recently been claimed and allowed by the Racing Conference. The four-year-old mare by Resinous from Gardant has been registered as Protectress and the two-year-old gelding by Lord Warden from Windshield, will race as Protector. Then there are the three-year-olds Queen’s Own and Quexona, the former a gelding by Gascony—Lady Fera; the latter a filly by Lord Quex —Arizona. Raroa is a three-year-old filly by Colossus —Cupid’s Mark. ReoRa, by Resinous—Campbird, and Raana, by Hunting Song—Rautorea, are three-year-old colts.

Surtoy, the 1936 colt by Surveyor from a Toy Gun mare, is liable to be confused with Survoy, by the same sire from Pen Lu. Bimbo, an aged hunter by Chaminade, approximates to Bibot, the yearling colt by Robespierre from Delice. An aged fnare by Plimmerton has been named Jacinta, while Jacynth is the three-year-old daughter of Gainsworth and Conchita. Should Be at Home: Young Paddon, who showed a lot of early speed in the mile hack event at the Pakuranga meeting, should be more at home in the hack sprints at Avondale, where he is nicely placed in the Henderson Handicap. Tip Toes: The two engagements set for Tip Toes at Avondale include both the hack Plate contests, and as she has given every evidence of being good over a middle distance, there is every’ reason to anticipate that she will not be disgraced if she is produced. Her winning effort in the mile at Paku-

ranga was a very fine one, for she had to be game to get up and then fight off her challengers. Back in Hacks: In their recent outings, both Parquet and Professional have been racing in open company, but with the raising of the value of the hack qualification they are now back in the lower grade. These two appear in the hack sprints at Avondale, and, although the distance will be too short for Parquet, it will not be so with Professional. The latter is well placed considering that he is back to hack company. Incidentally, the short hack races are not going to be easy to win at the suburban track. Cerne Abbas Penalised: At a result of her victory in the Marangai Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday, Cerne Abbas has been rehandicapped 61b for the Avondale Cup, making her weight 7.8. Merial :

Merial showed fair form at Trentham in July, but at the Pakuranga meeting she lost ground at the start of the big mile and was never afterwards sighted. This was well, below the form she is capable of, and it is possible that she will do better at Avondale, where she is in the sprint on the opening day. Guineas Candidate:

Apparently A. Cook is going to have Huntingmore tried as a Guineas candidate, for he has entered him for only the hack mile on the opening day at Avondale. This three-year-old revealed a lot of pace to lead the Pakuranga sprint field for over half a mile, and as he has made progress as a result of that outing he may be a surprise packet in the classics, as Karapoti was some years ago. A free-goer, he is well placed in the hack mile. Impressive: There was something very impressive about the way Captain Bruce won his first race at the Pakuranga meeting last month. He had all the worst of the running, and even near the post did not look like winning, but his final effort was that of a good horse. He should add to his record in the hack ranks at the Avondale fixture, and later he promises to take his place among the leading stavers. Last Year's Winner: .Velocipede won the Avondale Cup a year ago, carrying 8.3 under the 7.7 minimum. He has raced only three or four times since, and in this week’s contest be has 7.5 under the 7.0 minirtium.

Trotting Notes Knight of Australia: Knight of Australia continues to please in his work and he has more than an outside chance in this week’s Avondale Cup. He has shown his best form .in soft going and it is more than probable that an easy track will be offering at the Avondale fixture. Desert Gold Descendant: For many years the. descendants of that grand mare Desert Gold failed to reach anything like the standard she set herself as a galloper, and it once seemed as if she might have to be numbered among the brilliant racing mares who were failures as brood

mares. But then came Gold Rod a couple of seasons ago, one of the fastest two-year-olds ever to skim over the Australian turf; and at Wanganui last Saturday White Gold, another descendant in the second generation, also created a profound impression. White Gold is a filly aboul whom one simply had to go into rap tures at first sight, and that was when she was parading in the birdcage. She stood out in quality head and shoulders above the opponents she was shortly to vie with in the novice event,' so it was not surprising a little later on to note that she was being very confidently supported for a horse who had never previously raced Though she ran a little greenly, she outclassed her field when it. came to Lhe crucial test.

Anna Wong: Anna Wong cost backers a lot of money on Saturday’, but in the first novice event she got into trouble which probably upset her for the day, This mare is given as by Erin’s King from a mare by Wrack, but that Wrack mare is of the same family as Logan Chief, Grand Mogul, and other good ones. In Pickle: There is a short race in pickle for Charlie Chan. He covered so much extra ground in his races at Hutt Park that he was expected to cave in at the finish. In his right class he will take some heading off, especially over a mile and a quarter. Pulls Hard: A horse must be pulling something like double the weight of its driver and sulky when it pulls as U. Scott did in the Bollard Memorial, and this

fact and the soft track contributed to defeat on Saturday. Mixing It: Dark Hazard was a most promising pacer, and it seems that to keep him going at the trotting gait would cost him golden opportunities at the other. Oversight: Oversight, who won previously- on a soft track at Hutt Park, w-as made favourite for the Railway’ Handicap on Saturday, but, after being one of the leaders all the way to the straight, he finished a moderate fourth.
