He has just come in from a long spell necessitated by a mishap at Riccarton last year. An Unprofitable Trip: Dark Hazard’s trip to Hutt Park was not a profitable one. for in two starts the gelding failed to run into a place. Last Refrain: When they met. in the Gardiner Memorial, Last Refrain gave Araboa 91b and a length beating over a mile and a-quarter in 2min 8 1-5 sec. At Ashburton, Araboa pays for improvement by meeting Last Refrain on 81b worse terms. He did not, however, show signs of going off after his win at Oamaru, as he ran third in the Birthday Handicap and third in the Parliamentary Handicap.

Queen of Song: Queen of Song, who is engaged at Ashburton, started in 20 races last season without scoring a win. She was placed six times, the last occasion when Concertpitch beat her a neck at even weights in the Coronation Cup Handicap at Ashburton. Queen of Song (9.6) was third in the Winter Cup to Catalogue (8.13) and Dictate (8.2), and fifth in the Heathcote Handicap, won by Willie Win.

Greek Shepherd: Greek Shepherd, who is top weight in the Ashburton Handicap, did not race last season. During the season of 1935-36, when racing as a three-year-old, Greek Shepherd started in 19 races, of which he won eight and gained a place in three others. Greek Shepherd opened his winning account in the Penscroft Handicap at Ashburton and the Maungatua Handicap at Wingatui. Kinnoull beat him in the Dunedin Guineas in record time for the race. Greek Shepherd won the Wainui Handicap at Trentham, but was out of a place in the Harcourt Stakes, run in heavy going. Lowenberg beat Greek Shepherd by a neck in the New Zealand Derby, and another failure came in the Queen’s Plate in Auckland. Greek Shepherd (7.11) won the A.R.C. Summer Cup and Great Northern Derby, but Silver Ring beat him in the James Hazlett Gold Cup in Imin 38 2-ssec—a track record. Two unplaced performances followed, W.R.C. Autumn Handicap with 8.8 from Argentic (8.1) and Queen of Song (9.0). This was followed by a win in the Awapuni Gold Cup.
