PORT OF GREYMOUTH
TIMBER AND COAL EXPORTS. Both in the export of timber and coal through the port of Greymouth, there has been a considerable increase during the past month as compared with the corresponding period of 1936. Whilst there was a big drop in the overseas export of timber, this has been more than offset by the coastal business, but over the period of the past eight months, due to the heavy falling off of overseas export, the 1936 export figures are slightly in excess of those of the corresponding period of 1937. The timber export figures for the past month, with those of the corresponding period of 1936, indicated in parentheses, were as follows:— August, 1937: Coastal 988,800 sup. ‘feet (921,726 sup. feet); overseas, 1,581,018 (964,393); total, 2,569,818 sup. feet (1,886,119 sup. feet). January to August, 1937: Coastal 11,805,969 sup. feet (7,158,644); overseas 6,764,673 sup. feet (11,792,344); total 18,570,642 sup. feet (18,950,988). Coal exports during the same periods were as follows: August, 1937: Coastal, 15,345 tons 1 cwt. (10,638 tons 17 cwt.); overseas (bunker) 648 tons 15 cwt. (565 tons 3 cwt.); total 15,993 tons 16 cwt. (11,204 tons). January-August, 1937: Coastal 121,849 tons 4 cwt. (102,958 tons 16 cwt.); overseas 2,417 tons (2,892 tons 2 cwt.); total 124,266 tons 4 cwt. (105,850 tons 18 cwt).
