CITY INSURANCE

AUCKLAND DECISION. [Per Press Association], AUCKLAND. September 13. The Auckland Transport Board’s fire and fidelity insurances will be handled by the State Fire and Accident Insurance Department, and not by private local companies (except re-insurance) as the result of a decision made in committee, and announced by the Chairman, Hon. H. G. R. Mason, at to-day’s meeting of the Board. Mr. J. A. C. Allum strongly protested, and moved that the matter be referred back to a committee of the whole Board. He said it was a capricious action. “The public are getting a little tired of this talk of State, State, State, all the time. I hold that the State should not be given this business, simply because it is the State.” He added that the insurance business at present was shared by 39 local companies. Mr. H. A. Anderson supported the protest. Messrs Lark and Mason emphasised the savings which the establishment of the State Insurance Office had brought about. Mr. Allum’s motion Was lost.
