Mr and Mrs T. 'Tarrant, Dunedin, arrived yesterday on a holiday visit to Mrs 'Tarrants’ father, Mr T. G. Kitchingham, Marsden Road. Mr. A. Walton. Post and Telegraph Department, Greyrnoulh. left yesterday for Wellington, to attend Ihe annual conference of the Post and Telegraph Ollicers’ Guild. Miss Iris Davidson, of Hokitika, left on Saturday on a holiday visit to her cousin. Mr. G. D. Campbell, Manager. Bank New South Wales, Westport. Mr. Trevor Lloyd, for 34 years cartoonist of Ihe Auckland Weekly News and New Zealand Herald, died on Saturday. Mr. P. D. O'Connell, Supervisor. Postal Branch, Hokitika, has received notice of transfer to Dartield as Postmaster, and will he succeeded by Mr. W. J. Millner, of the Hokitika Branch. Passengers by yesterday's express to Christchurch included Mrs D. MeBrearty (to Auckland), Miss R. Carpenter (on return), Mrs Cooper and Miss R. Cooper (to Christchurch), Mr and Mrs D. Peterson (on return to Hastings.) Guests at Revington’s Hotel include Mr I. V. Schmoll (Christchurch), Mr N. Little (Christchurch). Mr N. D. Hood (Timaru). Mr J. Penman (Auckland). Mr and Mrs Gasson (Christchurch), Mr Rydd (Auckland). The death occurred on Saturday at the age of 82, of Mr. James Leslie, a Canterbury farmer, and member of a number of local bodies. He was born in County Derry, Ireland, and came to New Zealand when 21 years. Mr. W. B. Cunningham, manager of the Dunedin branch of the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd., has been transferred to Timaru. His place will be taken by Mr. H. H. Dobie, present manager of the Timaru branch. The death occurred at Styx, on Sunday, of Peter George Thomson, aged 6.3 years. Mr. Peter Thomson. Byron Street. Greymouth, who is a son of deceased, left yesterday for Christchurch to attend the funeral.
Mr S. L. Rogers, Superintendent of the Provident Life Assurance Society. Greymouth, has received notice of transfer to the position of Divisional Superintendent at Christchurch, and will leave at the end of the present month.
The two Auckland nominees for a Rhodes scholarship, chosen by the Professorial Board of the University College, are George Lawrence Hogben. 8.A.. and Darcy Walker. The former attended Auckland Grammar School. Walker came from Palmerston North High School.

Air. J. Dick, the Grafton, Auckland and All Black wing-threequarter, who plavcd for New Zealand in the first and second test matches against the Springboks, was married on Saturday evening last to Miss Alma Pearce, of Herne Bay. Auckland, al St, Stephen's Church. Jervois Road. The best man was Mr. T. Bunting, the Grafton and Auckland representative forward.
Her Excellency Viscountess Galway returned to Wellington by the Awatea yesterday. Lady Galway has been home on a health recruiting trip and also to attend the Coronation, and has been away from New Zealand for five and a-half months. On the return trip she left London on August 28. and travelled by air to Sydney, connecting with the Awatea. Her trip from England to New Zealand took 16 days.—Press Assn.
Constable M. P. Quirke. who leaves to-day for Dunedin, was farcwcllcd bv his fellow officers at the Police Station yesterday afternoon, when the presentation of a fountain pen was made by Inspector H. Scott. The Inspector referred to Constable Quirke’s good qualities and his work as a police officer and wished him success in his new location. Senior Sergeant E. Quayle, Sergeant F. R. Ebbett and other members of force added their good wishes, and Constable Quirke suitably replied. Constable R. B. Wooding of Wellington, who will replace Constable Quirke, will arrive this afternoon.
The death has occurred of Mr James Leslie, who for 26 years was chairman of the Paparua County Council, and was a member since the Council’s inception. He was also a member of the Waimakariri River Trust and Lyttelton Harbour Bomd. He was for many vears connected with the New Zealand Refrigerating Company's works at Islington, and was Works Manager from 1895 to 1926, when he retired to take up farming. At one time he was President of Canterbury Park Trotting Club, and at the time of his death was a member of the committee. He was also a member of the Canterbury Jockey Club and Banks Peninsula Racing Club. He was well known among farmers throughout Canterbury, and was held in very high esteem. He was born in County Derry, Ireland, on March 30. 1555. arriving at Lyttelton in 1876. —Press Assn.
