GOLF
Australian Open WON BY YOUNG VICTORIAN. (Received September 12, 7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 12. G. Naismith, the young Victorian golf professional, won the Australian Open Golf Championship by one stroke, from three other players. Naismith played very steadily throughout. Davies finished before Naismith, but McKay and Walker, playing together, were the last pair to come in. They both needed birdie threes at the last hole to tie with Naismith. McKy’s putt was'a couple of feet short, but Walker’s fifteen-footer stopped on the lip of the hole. Von Nida who was level with Naismith at the end of the third round, started the final round in great style. He was out in par figures, but on the homeward journey, putting badly. Ferrier’s last two rounds were full of wild shots, and Rufus Stewart, who was leading after thirty-six holes, tired badly to-day, and finished with a total of 309. A surprising feature of the championship was I hat from 165 players, only one, Davies, returned a score below par. Scores:— G. Naismith (Victoria) 74/74—299. D. Davies 76/81/70/73—300. T.
