Constable M. P. Quirk leaves tomorrow on transfer to Dunedin. Rev. Father A. L. Burger, S.M.. Christchurch, arrived on Saturday and proceeded to Westport. Mr and Mrs F. T. Eyre returned to Auckland on Saturday after a holiday visit to Hokitika. Mrs D. Mcßrearty leaves to-day on a visit to Wellington, Gisborne, Auckland and Hamilton, where her sons reside. Mr and Mrs L. O’Neill, who have been visiting relations at Greymouth, left yesterday on return to Westport. Miss M. Mitchell, who has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. Higgins, left on return to Kalgoorlie on Saturday. Mr. Willetts, Levin, who will succeed Mr. H. Perrin as Manager of I Hannah’s, Greymouth, arrived on Saturday. Mr Jack Chase, an old Greymouth I boy, who has been visiting the West | Coast for the boxing championships, | leaves this morning on return to i Palmerston North. The death occurred at Invercargill i of Mr. George Jaquiery. aged 53, cur-1 ator of the Southland Museum, and , a well-known botanist, horticulturist.; and zoologist.—Press Assn. Mr Trevor Lloyd, for 34 years car- I toonist of the Auckland Weekly News, ; and Herald, died on Saturday. He was a self-taught artist, and used the Maori as a source of humour.

Passengers by Saturday’s express to Christchurch included Miss V. Kolman, Deaconess Park, Mrs. L. Bowater (on return), Mr. A. Donnellan. Mrs. L. McNeill, Mr. H. Prescott, Mrs. Addison (to Christchurch). The death has occurred of Dr. William Stewart Roberts, the oldest member of the medical profession in Dunedin. He was born in September. 1853. at Mirzapore, India. in which country his father was a Judge of the Supreme Court for many years.—Press Assn.

The death is announced of Mr. John Bates, principal of the firm of John Bates and Company, Ltd., Christchurch. Mr. Bates, who was 7G years of age, fouonded the firm of John Bates and Company, when he was 23 years old. He is survived by Mrs. Bates, two sons, Messrs John E. Bates (Auckland) and Sydney Bates (Wellington), and three daughters, Mrs. Charles Eell, Mrs. Henry Vale, and Mrs. Tinker, all of Christchurch.
