WELLINGTON, September 10. Arrangements have been completed for the purchase of the Hotel Arcadia, Wellington, by the Government. The purchasing Department is the State Fire Insurance Office, the vendor, the present ownex- of the property, being a Temuka resident. The building is at. the junction of Stout Street and Lambton Quay, on a triangular block of land with a 68 feet [ frontage by 12 feet depth. The Department has secured the freehold as a step towards the ultimate development of the block to consolidate Government property in a valuable midcity area. There is no present intention of interfering with the hotel building adjoining the present State Fire Insurance building. CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. “Scandalous” was the comment, of a membei’ of the Rangiora County Council to-day, when cases were cited of men rejecting offers of work because of the “attractive” sustenance payment. It was stated that one man had refused a job for which he would have been paid £7/4/- fox' seven days’ work, and that anothei 1 able-bodied young man had preferred 17/6 a week sustenance “for doing nothing” to a steady job. It was decided that the clerk (Mr. S. G. Dailey) should bring the mater before the certifying officer.
