WESTPORT NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, March 1. Mr and Airs A. Loc.key have returned after a trip to Auckland and back in a “Beauty” Ford. Air. Ray Rider and Mr. Eddie Jenkins have also done the same trip in the same type of car. Air. Wat tie Atkins (of the Westport News) looks none the worse for a tri] to Christchurch, Dunedin and Welling ton. He returned to Westport on SunMr. Norman Greenland, son of out late Alayor, has been appointed Alanag er of the Timaru Branch of the TLS.S. Company. Mr. Jack Jeffrys and Air. Andy Phi! lips have returned from Nelson where they had been attending the races. Mr. and Alls Huddleston, of Ser gen nt's Hill, returned from a holiday trip to Takaka on Sunday. The Hon. J. G. Coates has been asked to attend a ball in Westport on March 101 h. If he refuses the common people will not have to go without coats.
The Westpoit Alunicipal Band had its initial practice under its new conductor. Mr. Thompson, on Monday night .in the bandroom. His Worship the Alayor and the majority of councillors were inattendance and listened to the opening number “Comrades in Arms’’. Although perhaps the audience were not musicians they were good listeners and appreciated the efforts of the bandsmen. On the whole, the members seem to appieciate their now Conductor, and it is not saying too much to prognosticate a successful futuie for the band. The Mayor formally welcomed Air. Thompson to AVestport, and hoped his stay here would be conducive to his owni welfare and that of the band. Air. Thompson suitably replied. Air. F. AleDonald, on behalf of the band, extended a welcome, and trusted to see great, things m the future. The members had stuck loyally to their late conductor. Air. AVheatley, and they would carry that spirit through and assist their new conductor in every manner. Air. AVheatley said he had stuck to the band and would stick to his successor and aid him wherever possible. He was pleased to see the Alayor and Councillors present
and hoped they would often drop in and bring a few friends along. It heartened the players to know their were citizens interested in their doings. The Band would go forward. An increase in membership was expected, and they would look forward to the time when the» would be an A grade band. Nothing sue coeds like success!
The AVestport Stockton’s output last week amounted to 14,73 tons 14 cwt. The AVatersiders’ Ball Committee arc offering a substantial prize for the best
delineator of the “Charleston” at the ball on Friday night. In respect to the judging, the audience will be supplied with ballot papers (take a pencil with you). There are differences of opinion as regards the “Charleston” but the
“Flat Charleston” is quite the vogue amongst “high sassiety” in the 4 ‘old dart”. Get your entries in quick, the list is getting well filled.
Airs Patterson says she is quite prepared to feed the hungry school children and whatever number come into AVestport on Al arch 11th., will not be turned away empty. Let me add one more congratulation to Johnny Robertson’s quivver full. He I is a credit to our town and besides being a good musician a champion of chair, pions, his personality is such that he 1 will never develop what is locally term cd a. “swelled head”. The Friendly Societies are holding their weekly eucher tourney on Thursday night at the Friendly Society Hall. .The prizes as usual arc good and the attendance no doubht will be as usual, good. Airs H. E. Holland whose health ha? Hot been of the best recently, has gone for a trip to Wellington, where it is hoped she will be restored to health. Alisses L. McGrath, Airs Black and Mrs 11. Halo and Airs Alartin, Miss Little and Aliss Cochrane and Air. Alartin left for Riwaka.
