SPEARFELT WINS CUP. A GREAT OVATION. , (Received March 1 at 8.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 1. There was tine, warm weather for the Flemington races, with a large attendance, many inter-St.«ce visitors being present. The going was good. Dempsey) 2 Pantheon 9.11 (P. Brown) .. .. 3 There were eight starters. Answer I made the pace early in the race from Bunkie (who was pulling hard), Longworthy and Pantheon, witli Spearfelt In t. Passing the stand, the order was much the same. Bunkie was still pulling hard. Near the six furlongs, Naos ■mil Spearfelt improved their positions. At the half mile Longworthy had charge from Bunkie, Answer and Pantheon, with Spearfelt coming fast. Answer led into the straight from Pantheon, but Spearfelt took charge below the distance, and won by one and a half lengths from the fast-finishing Naos. Pantheon was four lengths further back. Then came Answer, Strongbow, Longworthy and Bunkie, with Lansom last. The time was 3.»1I, an Vustralasian record. March Nursery Wensuni 8.19 Lucie Mnnette 6.13 2 Avant Courier 7.6 3 There were thirteen starters. Won by one and a quarter lengths. Time 1.12;}. Kendler was fourth. NOTES ON THE RACING. Tookarby was scratched for the Australian Cup at 1.45. There was a big field in the Hopeful Stakes. Eurythmos led in the early part of the race, but soon tired. Leontes was sixth at and
finished with a great run, winning well. W. Scanlon rode Leontes, who is owned by- Mr A. T. Creswick. There was a close finish for the Elms Handicap. Cairncross led at. the distance, and scored narrowly from King 's Consort, who came fast in the last two furlongs. The time was 1.38 J, which is fast, the last half milo being done in 48 sees. Elwood Fisher trains the winner at Flemington.
Hannan was alway r s prominent and won the Steeples comfortably. Tie was ridden by the veteran, Bob Connolly.
There was great cheering at Spearfelt’s victory in the Cup. The winner was ridden by' the New Zealander, B
Cairns. Tie is trained by the New Zealander A’ineent O’Neill. His time was an Australian record. The first ten furlongs took 2 mins 8J secs, and the last four 40} secs. The last mile occupied 1.42}. The places were the same as those in the Melbourne Cup. The winner is owned by Mr Douglas Grant.
A Now Zealand horse, The Wensuni, ridden by A. Cooper, won the Nursery brilliantly. Ilis time equalled the race record. The 5,500 guineas colt Avant Courier ran third.
