WESTPORT NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, February 28. Mr. J. Doyle, of Ngakawau, has passed his examination as an electrical engineer and is now entitled to write himself J. Doyle A.M.I.E.E. My attention has been drawn and J in turn wish to draw the attention of others to the alleged non-compliance with the Borough Building Bye-laws. It is stated that permits are granted which' are not in compliance with the bye-laws. If this is so, the Borough Council should immediately ”put their feet down. •’ ’ There is an organisation in San Fran cisco named the Pacific Tourists Limit ecl. It arranges tours for tourists and has for its New Zealand guide, philosopher and friend a Air. Wheeler, who accompanies parties touring the Dornin ion. In the tour of the West Coast, after the party leaves Nelson, it gets as far as Inangahua Junction, aiu| then Mr. Wheeler wheels his party to the left instead of the right, apd leaves the Buller Gorge behind them. This is a matter that the Progress League might delve into and get put right. No doubt having to retrace their steps after hav ing travelled to Westport through the Gorge lias something to do with it ano once the Coast road is finished, so that this becomes unnecessary, the better.
It is to be hoped that the weather holds good for the Wa’ersiders’ Bab on Friday night as so many of the fair sex are making great preparations. The decoratiofyi committee Jia-ve arranger: everything satisfactory, npd as the ladies are providing the- supper there should be nothing wanting in that respect.
At the funeral of the late Harry Holder the Rev. Jermyn officiated ami a. Alasonic service was conducted by the Right Worshipful Bro. Dr. Dunn, with WOi*. Bio. Johnson I’.AT. (.of Alokihinui Lodge) acting as AI.C. The cortege was a lengthy one, including the Member for the District, Air. H. E. Holland, Air. J. Menzies (Mayor) ami members of the Borough Council. Air. J. H. Powell (Chairman of the County Council), ami members of the Council; members of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association. Old Boys’ Football team, cricket clubs; etc A start has Leon made by Mr. Leu Puwiek towards making the new motor garage at the corner of Wakefield ami Palmerston Streets. The Borough workmeat are putting in a substantial approach and it will nof tfe long before the A.A.R.D. ears at comfonably housed. Britain, IT.ineo, Belgium and Holland have come to an agreement about th-, time summer time shall start. Now it tup to us to do something in that diree. tion. If we can only fix it there will not be the outcry there is. We’ve had no summer at all yet. This would i-e very handy for glad rag vendors. Ai ,prese>;|' they fill up thqir window.with filmy, fluffy, fancy finery, and the ladies have to; don heavy wraps Yes, it would be. an advantage if some thing could be done. Someone seems to credit our bands men with little common sense. A state meat is printed that our bandsmen had nt the back of their heads, when inipoi’ ing a conductor, an idea that lie eouhi run as Mavor of the Borough. Of course this is sarcasm and an attempt to create a little more diversion of opinion, so that everything in the garden shall not be lovely. A person has to Im three months in the Borough before get ting on the Burgers Roll. It is pleasant to find that there is :>l feeling gelling around, that proportional representation would be more satisfactory thaii the present system in use in Britain, also in New Zealand. The So cialist victory at Stourbridge ha.liought the argument to the fore. In Hie sweet bye and bye, v lien a feu of our Conservatives get the knock ami Labour gits the ball at ils feet, om Tory friends will be looking for i change of system. His Royal'Highness the Duke, is go ing to give written replies when addresses are presented to him, except in Iho chief centres and Io the Maoris at Rotorua. Why make it irksome to the various Mayers to address His High' ness? Why not post the address, so that it can he read at leisure, or put into the W.P.8..’ The people at Feilding will b< eiaciouslv permitted to watch tin h’oval Train to go by ,so they will necu no address cither way.
The dance and tournament put jh at the Friendly Socictys Hall on I rida> night, on behalf of the Kawatiri Row ing Club was well patronised, and th<’ (‘veiling lent itself to perfect enjoyment
The prize-winners at cuehre were: La dies, Airs Thurlow 1, Airs W. Blair 2 gents, Air. Solomon J. Air. A. I’ain 2. while Chris Ale Donald annexed th< 15’s. Airs Curtis siinplicd tin* music am Mr. W. Blair officiated as AI.C.
