FIRE BRIGADES.
N.Z. CONFERENCE. Yesterday’s Remits. GISBORNE, F,b. 28. The .Fire Brigades Conference opened this morning, the President (Mr Anderson) extending a. welcome to the delegates. He said the executive had passed through a very busy year. The number of brigades affiliated was 130., an increase of three. A start had been made to frame a standard drill book, though it was difficult to draw up a book to suit all brigades. Recommendations to meet the dangers from electricity had been made to the Government. The establishment of a depot had been fully wararnted, and the brigades were taking advantage of the luying facilities afforded. Following the Executive’s recommendation, it was decided to admit fire police to the Association, a Wellington application to this effect being rejected. The following remits were carried: — That passenger buses be compelled to carry fire extinguishers of not less than two gallons capacity; that the emergency door at the hack i)f all buses be plainly marked “fire exit,” or “emergency door”; that it be compulsory where motor garages are attached to dwellings that the outside walls, floor and roof be of fireproof material; that occasion be taken to wireless broadcast lectures on fire prevention. GISBORNE, February 28. At the Fire Brigade Conference today remits were dealt with as follows: Gisborne.—That the arrangement between the underwriters and the V> .F.B.A. be revised in regard to the conditions of the payment to salvage rates of pay.—Carried. Dannevirke.—That each Sub-Associa-tion have the right to decide tin* number of teams to compete at district demonstration. —Rejected.
Dunedin.—That at all future demonstrations extension ladders be used in [ reference to twenty-five feet ladder.-: —Rejected.
Te Kuiti.—That in future demonstra lions provision, be made to run dry coupling events with dry gear, ami, that, if necessary, those events be run under cover, this giving all teams equal chances. —Rejected.
Onehungai—That the captain of a team shall have th? light of immediate appeal whore in his opinion, the Exa miner is compelling his team to place the gear in a manner contrry to the printed conditions, or in any way vary or alter the conditions set out in tlu*

Cambridge.—That the examipers be instructed to examine all gear in coiled events on the placing marie instead of at ;he plug.—Adopted.
Avondale.—That advantage b-e taken where wireless stations are established to broadcast occasional lectures on fire prevention. —Carried, with an addition that the addresses be first submitted to the executive.
Hawera.—That the Retiring Presi dent be not eligible for re-election. Rejected. Past President Warner (Christchurch) read a paper on electrical heat ing of motors in cold weather, calling attention to a device by which the 1 machines could be started instantly, and which had been installed on the Christchurch engines. The device was simplicity itself, and the cost only £126; £l5 for conduit wiring and installation on the engine. The delegates were the guests of the Citizens’ Committee at a Cabaret this evening, when there was a very lai go attendance.
Fires at Gisoorne.
THREE SINCE DELEGATES CAME. GISBORNE, February 28. At four o'clock this morning, a fire broke out. in an eight-roomed house c-wned by the estate of the late C. 1’ Davies, and occupied by Dr. MeSweeney. One room was destroyed, and the remainder of the building was damaged by water. Dr. MeSweeney and his wife woke at the sound of crackling of the flames and escaped in their night attire. The house was insured in the National Office for two thousand. Miss Davies’ furniture, which remained in the residence, was insured foi five hundred in the same office, and Dr. Ab-Sweeney’s furniture and surgical m struments were insured for Five hundred in the South British. At 8.30 the Brigade turned out again to a minor outbreak, also in Kaitai, bul there was no damage. This marked the third occasion the Brigade has been cal! ed out since the. Dominion delegtes to the Fire Brigade Conference, began to assemble in Gisborne, the first outbreak occurring on Saturday morning, when a. six l oomed house. at Tehapara was destroyed.
