A colt by The Welkin —Aristo was sold for £5OO to Air. W. Thomson. GENERAL NOTES. Limerick was given only a short sprint on Saturday. F. D. Jones expects to leave Wellington for SycTncy with the Liniond gelding on Alarch 18, a programme which will permit of Limerick having two or three races before he tackles the St. Leger at Randwick on Easter Saturday. Count Cavour is still being confined to steady work. The Solferino gelding has had a heavy season of travelling and racing, and an easy time for a week or two would bo beneficial. He has been nominated for the Trentham Gold Cup, and if he is to make the trip he will soon be moving along *again. An Australian rider, named Al. Payne, has arrived in New Zealand, and wih probably make Riccarton his lieauquarters. The Trentham Gold Cup has attract ed a select entry. Rapine stands out as the star, with Star Ranger to assist him, while those who may oppose Mr. A. B. Williams’s pair are Footfall, Count Cavour, Pinthair and the three-year-olds Alagna Charta, Ilynanna and Queen's Choice. ■ Jericho has been left in the North Island Challenge Stakes and a trip to Trent ham next week is under serious consideration. He shapes like a stayer, I nt Gascony is one of his own age who twill be a hard nut to crack. Set S-iil is due to make her next ap- | pea rance at Easter. * When Heroic won the St. George [Stakes at Caulfield he brougnt his total up to £36.762 10s or £l2B 10s behind J 1 airythrnic. Gloaming’s record of £43,.11*0 looks in danger if Heroic stands up to his racing at. Flemington and Randwick. Al any a punter after making a bet has found that he has backed a non-trior, | and has confided to a friend that he was on a ‘‘dead ’un”. At Armidalc a fortnight ago, s.iys a Sydney writer, r well-known local enthusiast, Mr. D. Ale Kinnon, actually backed a real dead ( ne. A few minutes before the start of the Duniaresq Handicap, AlcKinnon approached Joe Kingsley, trainer 01 I. aton Boy, and said: “Well Joe, I have £4O on yours to get me out of the meeting.’’ “You are on a dead ’un, then’’ replied Kingsley. ‘‘l know you too well for that. You would not tell me wrong,’’ laughingly remarked AUKinnon. “I tell you you are on a dean ’un,” said Kingsley. “Look down the gully there, and you will see for yourself. He is lying there stone dead.” “They are still betting on the race, and I left the ring only a moment ago, after making my bets. How long has he been dead?” “About five riim/es, ' said Kingsley. “I must have backed him after In* had died,’’ replied AlcKinnon, “but I suppose I will get my money back.” As the gelding was described as a starter, Tie did not do so, and, therefore, actually racked a horse after it was dead. An estimate of the amount won in slakes by The Hawk, published in Aus tialia up to the close u/ last season, gave the same at £20,891. The opinion has been expressed in the Dominion that the total was well in advance o.’ that quoted. From i-*m'aet that the amount allotted to second and thiro horses is not given in the “Australian Turf Register” the exact amount won by horses is difficult to assess. However in raking up figures relating to the Hawke’s exidoits the facts are beyond dispute that when racing in New Zealand at two three and four years old respectively the son of Afartian won stakes to the value of £7260. The prize money attached to the five races The Hawk v;on in Australia at five years amounted to £6336 and at six years old the eight races he won there added a further £8569 to his total, and at seven years old one win that came to him was worth £5Bl. This season Tin Hwk has won two races in the land of his birth worth £lO5O, which brings the total to £23,796, irrespective of other place moneys which he earned at five, six, and seven years old respectively in Australia The Hawk’s winnings can be safely set down as over £24.000 of which the sum of about £17,000 has been won for his present owner, J. AT. Cameron, who purchased the brilliant Afartian gelding at a low figure in 1923.
