Air E. Growcott and party who have been engaged prospecting in the Wilberforce district during the past week, returned home last evening. While not successful in making any discoveries of a sensational nature, they found
many indications of gold in the various places prospected, which may result in future successful operations. They report the wire cage over the Wilberforce gorge in good condition. Mr Coles, postmaster here for the past five years, retires on the Sth, of next month, after forty-one years e"’ ployment in the P. and T. Department. Tn his official capacity, Mr Coles was universally recognised As a courteous nnd obliging officer. As Returning Officer for the General Assembly, Mr Coles had the somewhat, unique privilege, shared only by one other officer in the Dominion, of deciding the result of a Parliamentary contest which had resulted in a tie. On the occasion referred to Mr Coles, contrary to the rie-
eept-d precedent, voted according to his political dictates and against the
sitting Member. It is the intention of Mr. Coles and family to take up their future residence in Hokitika.
The news of the transfer of the Rev Dr Kennedy to the Cathedral City, where he undertakes the important duties of Administrator at the Cathedral parish, was received with general
expressions of regret. During his six years’ occupancy of the Pastoral position of St. Marys parish, Dr Kennedy has won the regard and respect of all classes and creeds. His devotion to duty and his unremitting attention to the aged and infirm have secured for him a lasting place in the affection ot his own people. Mr R. A. Cranston is returning to America. At San Francisco he w : ’ meet the successor to Mr S. Ford w’ho is due here in May next, and Air Ford will be leaving shortly after. While here Mr Cranston arranged for boring prospecting operations to start at the Teremakau near Kumara, and Mr H. Butland who will be in charge of the party was out yesterday to fix the site for the boring operations.
