MILLERTON NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) Recently at the newly-constructed dam of the Westport Coal Coy., the annual local swimming carnival took place in ideal weather, before a large crowd, of spectators. Amongst those present from the Jiill were the Director of the Coal Company’s along with the management, who ■watched the events with interest or studied ways of improving the dam. There is no news to hand from the Committee whether they gave any suggestion of improving the dam. A lot of valuable work could be done in the off season. It is to be hoped that the Committee get in. touch with the management to effect an improvement. In my opinion, this could be made into an ideal swimming resort. The following were the winners of the events on the first day:—2syds schoolboys race, J. Berry; 25yds (If to 18 years), S. Taylor; diving (14 to IS years) A. Morgan; adults diving, W. Douglas; 50yds (14 to 18 years), S. Taylor; 25yds adults race (Hying start), II Armstrong; 75yds adults race, 11. Armstrong; long dive (open), J. Carroll; 25vds breaststroke (schoolboys) E. Be-

vin; schoolboy championship, 50yds, .1. Berry. The second day’s results for all

open events were: —25yds, Smith diving, S. Shaw; long dive, A. Morgan schoolboys’ diving championship, >1 Berry; 50yds breaststroke, R. Adams 25yds adults race, H. A benefit concert took place last Tuesday in the County Hall on behalf of Mr and Mrs Sheridan and family. Mr Sheridan has been unable to follow his usual occupation for some m0i...past. The artists were all in the best proceeds were £22 Ss 3d. Mr Sheridan of nick, rendering their items well I lie sincerely thanks the public of the district for the generosity shown by them in his regard and assures one and all that it will never be forgotten. Mr T.nrrv Diamond (Harbour Master at Mangatina) was a visitor to Millerton last week-end. “Larry” told me that lie was still in charge of tourists who visit Mount Magnet, so visitors to Mangatina are asked to communicate with him for a trip around the Mount, which no doubt they will find a place of interest under so capable a guide.
