BAND CONTEST
A Grade Quickstep. CANTERBURY MOUNTED WIN. GREY UNPLACED. WELLINGTON, Feb. 27. For the Band Contest yesterday the weather was ideal, and tin- Quickstep Competition was decided on Athletic Paik. The atttndnnre vns about fifteen thousand. Thn contest has been a wonderful sucres? from cv-tv point of view. There were thirty-six bands comp ting in the Quickstep. Separate prizes were allotted for each grade. The conditions for both grades were the saint*, except that the A. Grade bands piaye.l Mr C. Trussell’s “ Wairarapa,” and the B. Grade played “The Outpost.” Th“ Fit st Canterbury Battalion Band A.mhurton), and St. Kilda (Dunedin) were the popular fancies in the A. Grade, and Invercargill Civic in the B. Grade, and they were placed in that order by the judges. At the close of tl.e competition, mass- <•«] bands playetl the contest march under the bat( of Hie judge, Mr Halliwell. Results:— A. GRADE. Grade Band obtaining the highest musical I marks in the two test selections and the Quickstep was won by Queen Alexandra’s Own Band (Wanganui). The Beason Shield, under the same conditions, was also won by the Queen Alexandra’s Own Band. The Hawke’s Shield for the A. Grade Band obtaining the highest aggregate points in the two test selections and the Quickstep, including drill, was won by the Queen Alexandra’s Own Band. The Conn Shield for the A. Grade 1 Bai.d obtaining tin* highest aggregate f ! points in the two test selections, the Hymn Contest, and musical points in the Quickstep, was won by the Queen [Alexandra’s Own Band. The Boosey Shield for the B. Grade Band obtaining the highest aggregate music marks in tl.e two test selections and the Quickstep, was won by the Fifth Aiounte<l Rifles (Oainaru). The McLeod Cup for the Band securing the most points in the Hymn contest was won by the Grt-ymouth Municipal Band. CIIAAIPION OF CHAMPIONS (Silver Cornet and Geld Medal). J.
