LAWN TENNIS.

(By “Racquet.”) West Coast tennis players have had an exceptionally good season, so far the weather having been perfect. It is pleasing to note that the different clubs are arranging with each other and tlie weather is permitring the games to eventuate. Last. Saturday the Grey A team journeyed to Hokitika, ami met the Hokitika Club’s A team in their return match, the Grey team being defeated by 25 games. Hokitika were much superior in singles play, whilst Grey showed to .advantage in both doubles and combines. United jdayed Runanga on Hie same day at Greymouth and had an easy victory. It was unfortunate for Runanga that they were without the services of their four top ladies, the team being much weakened in both ladies’ singles ami conibines.

To-day the Grey Club play United on the Unitml courts. Last time these teams met Grey won fairly comfortably, but the games were all well contested. McCarthy def rated Warnes 9-5, after a very good set. Warnes led 4-1, but McCarthy settled down and ran out 9-5 in a very creditable style.

Ju defeating Denn oh y 9-5 McKay proved himself to be at his best, his driving to the bark line being a. feature. Jamieson defeated Carr after a very uninteresting display. Paddy was Hie winner all the way. Carr being unable to show anv form whatever.

Simpson, Kitchingham and Tnrtill all won thetr games.

The ladies’ singles were looked forward to with great interest on account of the meeting of Aliss Warnes (present \V(»st Coast champion) and Mrs Mc-

Carthy. However, those who contemplated a great go for honours were doomed to disappointment. Mrs McCarthy made no match of it whatever, winning 6-2 quite easily. IL.wever, this is no reflection on Miss W'arnos, because it mu.-t bo admitted that ns for as Indies’ tenuis is concerned in Greymouth Mrs Cc.Carthy is in a class on her own (A grade). The iest of Iho ladies’ singles w’cre evenly contested. Reversals are sure to ■;ike i lace to-day, and a good tournament will certainly remit. Wellington did not win the Wilding Shield quite is easily ns many a critic would have 'nt’c’pated. The Wellington team was •i ■: :Irong a.s was possible Io get and looki d like having a run o\. r victory, but, the Canterbury men all rallied to the occasion and put up a g”eat fight. Or< arrival back in Austialia Mr N. Peach (captain of the N.S.W. touring loam) stated that the standard of play n Now Zealand was very high and greatly improved, and considered that •he time is approaching when New Zealland will make their bid for the Davis Cup. The following men will represent Greymouth v. United at United courU to-day:—McCarthy, Dennoh Simpson, Kitchingham, Turtill and McLeod.
