GENERAL NOTES. It is reported from Kiccarton that T. IL Gillett has the steeplechaser, Charlatan, in very forward condition, and there is every reason to expect the Winkle gelding to play an important part in Forthcoming cross-country The decision to give Count Cavour a .-pell has keen waived and lie. is being kept in easy work at Ric.cariun. His next public appearance will probably b*at th.- C.J.C. Easter Alccting. lie still retains his Australian engagements, but nothing has yet been decided as to whether he will make the trip to Sydney. The crack Australian tree year-old Kampion, has won £26,-184 10s in stakes as a result of nine wins and one st ‘uond. Escapade, who raced so well at Ad-! dington recently against the pacers being only beaten by Nimble Direct.,! should do Better next effort, despite thei fact that she went better than 4mm 30sec for the two miles. She has not had much race experience in the best class races and her recent race should - • beneficial to her. Escapade is a. contented marc, and although she has done some travelling and racing this* season she is in great condition and' looks none the worse for her exertions. She is in at 4.32 mark in the trotters’ race at Hutt Park to-day. The speedy Ruffles has not had a race

yet this year, but he may be found racing again before the country circu’t concludes. It is stated that he has made a good recovery from the cold that troubled him when he was at Ellerslie in December.

Master Audo, engaged at Ilutt Park to-day is reported to be doing good work. He won at the last meeting of the Wellington Club. Kutuku Jack, if brought to Ilutt Park, may pay his way. This is an improving pacer who should win good races. When returning thanks recently after receiving the cups won by PiutFair, Mr R. A. McKenzie bestowed generous praise on his trainer, T. Lloyd. There is no doubt that Lloyd has been most successful with Mr McKenzie’s horses during the past few seasons. While never having more than a handful in work, and some of them not too sound, Lloyd has led in the winner of the New Zealand Cup (Sunart). Metropolitan Handicap twice (Kilgou* ar.d Piuthair), Aianawatu Cup twice (Glaid.hu and Clarinda), Fendalton Handicap (Clarinda), Egmont Cup (Piuthair), Hawke's Bay Stakes (Miruesonta), Hawke’s Bay Cup (Sunart), Napier Cup (Clarinda), Taranaki Cup (Piuthair), Wanganui Cup twice (Sunart and Piuthair). In addition, he has won good stakes elsewhere. Sunart won a Wellington Handicap in the spring, Piuthair won the last Pearce Handicap and Sunart was Ivery unlucky not to win a Thompson iHandicap. Mireusonta has accounted f for several first-class races, and altogether Mr McKenzie has no reason to regret his ventures on the turf.
