NOTES ON THE PLAYING. WELLINGTON, February 25. Commenting on the B Grade second test piece, the judge said the piece differed very much from the first selection. One suited some bands better than the others. The winner had taken some risk in playing with such quiet tone, as there was danger of losing quality, but the band had been successful, and it was a distinctly good effort. Several banfls had excellent soloists, but lapses in general work had told against success. On the whole the playing was very good. Oamaru Band gave a good rendition, iand next in order of merit came New [Plymouth, Dannevirke and Central (Missions bands, while Miramat also played well.

Tn the trombone trio. Greymouth secured 45 marks, or four less than the winners (Dannevirke). Tom Lim (Greymouth) played well in the E Flat Bass event, gaining 94 marks, while J. Moye (Grey) secured 90 marks. Bandsman Sutherland, formerly of Runanga Band, secured fourth place jn his section. Although the Grey soprano, Bandsman I’. Griffin, through his lip splitting, could not play in the first A Grade test selection, he recovered for the final test. Griffin could not play, however, in the soprano solo test. Bandsman J. King, who dead-heated for first place in the soprano tost, is the son of Mr King, managfij - , State Mine, Rcwanui.
