Tn the course of an address on timber at the Mastertoil Rotary Club. Mr C.JL Daniell gave some interesting figures as to the quantity of timber in a log of a particular size. Tn the first place, he said, only two-thirds of the solid content of the log was available as sawn timber, the balance being sawdust, angular pieces, and waste. Of the sawn timber 18 to 20 per cent, was not fit for building The sapwood of rimu. known as “ordinary building,” ranged from 45 to 55 per cent. Of the heart wood, which might run up to from 4 to 15 per cent, of the whole product, about one-third, or say 4ft in one hundred, was (it for joinery work. A young man who advertised, in an Auckland newspaper that he had a motor cycle for sale is now lamenting his rashness in placing too much trust in the honesty of strangers. A man called to see the cycle, stating that he wished to buy a machine, and giving the name “Williams.” He asked to be allowed to try the machine, and with the owner’s consent he jumped on it and rode away. He has not since been seen bv the owner.

Among the Overseas visitors who will be deer-stalking in South Westland in the approaching season will be Mr God frey Williams, the Welsh coal magnate, who is now camped in the Makarora district with a large party of friends. The camp consists of about 30 tents. Ten saddle horses are available for the use of the party. Air Williams and friends will probably shoot over the Landsborough territory in Westland, where the best heads are now believed to be located.

Page had same strong comment to make on the design of small houses, with bad proportions ami grotesque effect obtained by the addition of foolish features to make them attract the eye. The work of converting the Christchurch telephone system from overhead to under-ground is proceeding -slowly but surely, and at the present time (reports the Press) the underground wires are being joined. Some time will elapse before this work will be finished. A start has been made with the erection of the heavy line between the telegraph office and Shirley. This will carry the trunk circuit from the north, especially the new telephone circuit between the North and South Islands. Good progress is being made with the overhead lines, and the rewiring of subscribers’ premises.

A discussion on the danger of woodborer being brought into New Zealand in imported timber provided a humorous touch at a Farmers’ Union meeting in Wanganui. One member describ ed a certain telegraph post at Waverley, where he had seen “a great big thing with a face like a bulldog coming out of a. hole in the post.” Another member: “Was the pole in front of the hotel?” The discussion was ended abruptly.
