REEFTON NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent}. IMPROVEMENTS TO POWER PLANT. The Reefton Electric Light and Power Company has just completed a very fine piece of work in connection with its water race, which is used in generating electric light and power fur the town. In the heavy flood which occurred last October a portion of the race was carried away, and it was then decided to adopt a progressive policy and construct the upper portion of the race in concrete. This work was put in hand about the New Year and is just completed, being the most permanent structure of its kind ever erected in the district. A huge reinforced concrete wall forming the main wall of the water race has been built. It is about 500 yards in length, eight feet deep, three feet thick at the bottom ami 20 inches at the top. The cost was about £2OOO. It is hoped that as a result of the increased capacity of the race, there will always be an adequate supply of power both day and night. Hitherto in the dry weather, the Company was often short of power, but with the new intake it will be possible to turn the whole of the Inangahua river into the race, and to develop 200 horse power.
The. addition to the race was designed and carried out by Mr David I’anckliurst. and reflects much credit upon him and upon the Company. It will ensure a. sufficiently large supply of power to meet all the needs of the town for manv years to come.
The water was permanently turned into the new race on Saturday last and a number of local residents were present to witness the opening.
The many friends of Mrs .1. B. Auld who recently underwent an operation in a Christchurch hospital, will be pleased to hear that she is making a good recovery. The canvassers on behalf of the Tnangahua A. and P. Association during the last week ends have had a splendid reception in both the Grey and Inangahua Valleys, both ns to membership and entries for the coming Show. At present the prospects for the gathering are highly favourable and a better exhibition than last rear is assured.
