ANAESTHETIC DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 21. The inquest was concluded to-day into the death of Agnes Joyce Swanson, aged 5, who had one foot almost severed by being eaught in the knives if a mowing machine at Leeston, and who died tlie same evening under an anaesthetic at the Christchurch Hos pital. The evidence was that the child had an enlarged thymus gland, and tha< this caused asphyxia when the ether was administered. The medical > testimony was that the enlargement of this gland was not discoverable bv external examination, and the child appeared normal. When the ether was administered her breathing became irregular, and it almost immediately ceased. Restorative measures were tak I eh instantly, and the surgeon -even opened the abdomen and massaged the heart, but the child was dead. The Coroner, Mr Mosley, S.M., said he was satisfied that every rare had been taken by the medical officers at the operation. > ■ DROWNING INQUEST. WELLINGTON, February 21. An inquest was held oh Charles Clifford Harper, who was lost from a launch in the harbour on the 6th. of February. A- vyeTct of -accidental drowning was returned. The evidence showed that the body was not clothed. A heavy military overcoat and gum boot were worn when deceased fell ovei board, indicating tTiaf they were removed in the water, but that Tapp became exhausted. FATAL FALL. INVERCARGILL, February 21. SYDNEY. Feb. 21. While filling a tank wagon with petrol at a bond store, at Pyrmont, the motor back-fired, causing the petrol to explode. J. Cahill and C. Smith were trapped by the flames behind the waggon, and badly burned before being extricated. They died at the hospital. JOCKEY KILLED. MELBOURNE, Feb. 21. During the running of the Stanley Steeplechase, six horses fell. A joeke’y P. Dinsdale, was so badly injured that he died at the hospital. Three other jockeys were taken to the hospital. CANOE TRAGEDY. AUCKLAND, Feb. 21. Ira Broxon, 23, resident of Mangere. was drowned at Panmure Beach while rowing to a yacht, in a collapsible canvas canoe, after midnight. White, one of the yacht’s crew, who is a strong swimmer, dived and grasped Broxon, but after ten minutes lost his hold of tlie deceased in the darkness, and could not locate him again. Broxon was a prominent athlete. He was an upholsterer by trade and resided with a widowed mother at Mangere. BOATING FATALITY. AUCKLAND, Feb. 21. Robert Brown, 34, was drowned on Sunday by the capsize of a boat containing a fishing party, when struck by a squall after rounding North Head. The others of the party were Charles Anderson, Harry Corrigan, and Charles Yarwood. The four men held on to. tlie up--1 turned boat for about half an- hour, then Brown disappeared. The others were rescued by a sailing boat. Brown is survived by a wife. a*d •three..ehildren.
