GREAT STORMS.
HAVOC IN U.S.A. Ashore and at Sea. SAN FRANCISCO, February 18. More storms on thy, Pacific had i disastrous effect .on shipping as it approached. Already havoc has been wrought on the Coast. Three marine accidents have been reported, the most serious of which concerned the United States Shipping Board’s freighter, Elkton,, which it is believed was sunk off Iloilos (Phillippines.),, with a crew of thirty-seven, aboard. Four destroyers, are searching for the vessel between tho Philippines and Guam, where she was last heard from. Heavy seas forced the Canadian freighter, Steel Exporter, to return to Honolulu, for engine repairs. The. Standard- oil tanker, F. 11. Hillman, bound for San Francisco from London was. driven ashore at San Nieho las Island, but finally succeeded in get I ting off the rocks. At New Orleans, tornados swept see tions of Louisana and Mississippi last night, killed at. least thirty-thr.ee and injured scores and left a trail of damage. NEW YORK. February 18. The heavy toll of tnc cyclone was on the plantations at Newellton, Louisiana, where fourteen, were, killed anil many injured. There is a prospect ot the casualties being increased when the neighbouring plantations are heard from. Nine were killed and eighteen seriously hurt at Pleasant Hill (Louisiana), night were killed and several injured at , Rosehill (Mississippi). The storm swept into Louisiana near Shreve port, travelled eastward across the northern sections of both States, increasing in fury as it proceeded, accom panied by high winds and heavy rains. Rescue workers are still searching the ruins of dwellings.
