BLACKBALL NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent.) ODDFELLOWS’ FUNCTION. There was a large gathering in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Blackball, on Febru ary 9th, when a complimentary dinner was given to the visiting delegates, who were attending the annual conference of the United Westland District Independent Order of Oddfellows. A welcome was offered on behalf of the Loyal Blackball Lodge by Bro. 11. K. Long, and the banquet was opened by the Chairman, Brother Pascoe, with the usual toast. “The King and the Manchester Unity.” Next came a musical item by the orchestra (Messrs Fergu-
son. piano; Grindle, cornet: Baxendale, violin; and Douglas, saxophone). The Past District Grand Master, Bro. Collins, then installed the following officers:— Bro. G. Pascoe, District Grand Master; Bro. 11. K. Long, D.D.G.M. Bro. Collins proposed the newly made district officers, and Bros. Pascoe and Long responded. "The “Prisoner’s Song,” bv Mr Shields, was encored, and “Shipmates of Mine,” was given. Mr T. Hogan’s song, “The Mountains of Mourne, ” was also encored. The toast “Visiting Delegates,” was proposed by Brother R. Ramage, and responded to by Bros. Evenden (Kumara). and Powel ' (Charleston). After the duet by Messrs A. Robertson and .1. Douglas, “The Battle Eve,” the toast of “Sister Lodges” was proposed by Bro. Clark, and coupled with the names of Bros. J. Douglas and A. Simpson. A song by Mr Sheehan, “Parted,” was encored, and “Because” was given. Then came a musical item by the orchestra ’“After the Storm,” (encore “ NjO Wonder’’). The toast “Kindr-'l Societies” was proposed by Bro. 11. Long and responded to by Messrs R Smith and P. Gilbert (Druids’ Lodge). Songs were given by Messrs J. Kerr (“Monkey Nuts”), Mr Shields (“Mate of Mine,” encore “We’d Better Bide a [Wee”), Mr G. Hall (“Memories”). |P.G. Bro. McCarthy presented a I P.D.G.M. Jewel to Brother T. Collins, and a Jewel of Merit was presented to Bro. H. K. Long for securing most new members during the year. The song by -Mr Hogan, “Adieu Marie,” was encored, and' 1 B-lieve Me” vas given. Th-' recitation “The Man from Ironbark’ was encored, the response being Taking His Chance”. The toast “Lodge Secretaries ” was proposed by Bro. McCarthy, and responded to by Bros. Pascoe, Cruse, and Powell. Next came a duet by Messrs A. Robertson and J. Douglas, “Watchman, What of the Night,” and a musical item by the orchestra, “Night,” (encore “That Certain Party”). The toast of “The Ladies” Was proposed by Mr Sewell and responded to by Messrs J. Neilson arid J. llaisty, and the toast “Loyal Blackball Lodge,” was proposed by Bro. Powell and coupled with the names of Bros. R. Dall and E. Jones. After songs by Messrs J. Kerr and F. Wolstenholme, the proceedings closed with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
