WESTPORT NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, February 18. The County Council have decided to make a tour of inspection of the West Coast on March 6th. Now as March 6th happens to fall upon a Sunday, what about organising a giant picnic? We should all be able then to boost the beautiful scenery, eatfes, agricultural potentialities, etc., and know better what we are talking about. We could declare Sunday, March 6th, a general holiday for all churches and have religious discourses en route. Who will organise? Maybe a similar inspection might take place from the Greymouth end. By a strange coincidence, the matter of doing certain work at Stafford St., the boundary between Borough and County, was postponed pending further arrangements. Perhaps the real reason is that both bodies are up against it ■financially and are awaiting the beginning of the new financial year. Everyone knows that good resolutions are made with the new year.

The Traffic Inspector wrote about speeding through Granity and other matters. Someone must have written tn Mr Sloss about it. lie hasn’t been seen in these parts for a long time. Mr C. G. Curtis, who is to relieve Mr Parker, Manager for the Westport Coal Company, while on holiday, arrived in Westport from Christchurch, accompanied by Mrs and Miss Curtis. Charlie will be looking up a host of old friends.

During a discussion upon the timber importations, at the County Council meeting on Wednesday, the County Chairman stated that timber could be landed in New Zealand at a lesser freight, than it could be landed in Wellington from Westport. If that if the ease, is there not another problem to face? Providing the millers guarantee not to raise prices ami provided a prohibitive duty be placed on Ameri can imports, what better chance has

the user of getting timber at a reasonable price than heretofore? The timber merchants will liardly benefit, <ibuilding Operations will be curtailed. Methinks some better arrangements re freightage will lie necessary, in addi‘jion to the import duty!

Miss K. Egan conducted the business of Town Clerk ns to the manner born on Wednesday evening at the last Borough Council meeting. ’l’hi‘ new concrete benzine store for Shilton find Jones, at the corner of Rintono Street and the railway is well under weigh. The flooring is finished and the reinforcement rods in place. After this job is finished, the contractors will make a start at Gibbs’ new

garage, corner of Palmerston and Wakefield Streets.

There are many in the district who still have happy recollections of Mr l-\ F. Monroe. Most people may know that he went to the Straits Settlement, and in Malayia, it is stated, ho was successful in some floatation ventures. The latest is that Mr and Mrs F. F. Monroe have gone to England. A good many old friends will still wish him

“good luck.’’ In connection with the working of what is known as Cooks Lease, by the Westport Coal Company, Cr Hawes at the Countv*"-Council meeting on Wednesday stated that the Company had contracted to convey (lie workers by charabancs, Engineer Schadick stating that thev would carry fifty men.

Flood damage expenditure, according to the County Clerk, was responsible for an unforseen loss to the

County of £1827. The Hon. W. 11. anil Mrs Mclntyre have received invitations to attend a garden party to be held at Government House, Wellington, on Tuesday, March Sth. Readers’ attention is called to the [head of this column and the advertisement of Mr 11. E. Holland’s meetings.
