OBITUARY.

TCHN JOSEPH GREANEY. Y< iy general regret was felt yesterday i i Grey mouth at the sad news of Air John J. Greaney’s sudden death, which took place at his residence within a couple of hours of his becoming ill. Air Greaney, who was one of the best known citizens, was at work at his farrier’s forge yesterday morning, but abouA 9 a.m., when Messrs R. McKane and AlcKendry were present, he Nad a seizure, and became unconscious, the result of an attack of heart weakness. He was conveyed to his home, where Dr. J. W. Alcßrearty attended him, and for a time he was thought to be recovering, but at 11 a.m. death supervened. The late Air Greaney, who was 53 years of age, and a native of Greyniouth, had for about thirty-two years past, carried on the business of general smith and farrier. He was prominently identified with various local bodies and other organisations, ha*, mg been a member of the Grey Hospital Board at the time of his death, and been one of the most useful members of that body, taking a praiseworthy interest in the hospital patients. He was also formerly a member’ of the Greymouth Borough Council, ;u. . for a lengthy time of the Grey County Council. In his earlier manhood, he devoted seven years’ service to the Fire Brigade, and fourteen years to the Greymouth Band, and was a member of the Hibernian Society for many years. Mr (Heaney was also a staunch upholder of the rights of Labour, and was always pleased to identify himself with the movement, on behalf of which he contested many elections, and some of them in the days when it called for more than ordinary moral courage to

do so. He man of the highest integrity, and a genial personality, whose passing very many friends throughout the West Coast will sincerely regret. He leaves a widow (a member of the wellknown Donoghue family, of Ross), two daughters, Misses Kate and Josephine Greaney (the former being assistant Secretary to the Hospital Board), and two sons, John (of the Alarist Brothers Novitiate, Tuakau) and Alex (of the “Grey River Argus” staff). Besides his mother, Mrs Greaney. a pioneer resident of Greymoutli, deceased also leaves four brothers, Daniel (Hokitika), James (Queensland), David (Greymouth), and Denis (Greynmuth), and five sisters* Alesdanies J no. Keating (Greymouth), AL Donnellon (Nelson (’reek), Alisses Teresa Greaney (of the Blackball School staff), and Julia Greaney (Greyniouth), while there is also a sister residing at Wanganui. The funeral takes place morrow afternoon.
